Knight Of Dawn: SD in Reno

    Hello,

What are the best places to play in Reno for SD? I've been hearing that Reno is better overall for SD than LV... why is this so?

    Thanks in advance!

There are a few reasons the single deck is better in Reno. First there's the good penetration. Even heads up, most places go pretty deep. Second is the number of games. Just about every casino in Reno/Sparks offers single deck, with very few of those "superfun21" boondoggles. Then there's the low limits. Try Bonanza for $1 single deck. I've yet to see a 6:5 table in Reno.

The only strike against Reno is the restriction that doubling is only allowed on 10 and 11 in some joints. Generally the penetration more than makes up for this, and there are plenty of places where you can double on any first two cards. Some say there's too much heat, but I don't think it's any worse than any other single deck I've seen.

They may not be the "best" places to play in Reno, but my favorites are Pepp*rmill, Atlant*s, J*hn Ascu*ga's Nugg*t, Cal-Nev*, and B*ldini's.

    Have fun.

Check out Trackjack. The conditions are current as of my last trip a little over a month ago. It should be obvious from the reports as to why the overall conditions are good. The thing that makes some Reno area SD games good is the same thing that makes a pornographic movie good.

The big negative about Reno is the amount of heat you will get by playing green.

Haven't been in Circus Circus lately, have you? They have several 6:5 tables.

You may ask, "Why would anyone play a 6:5 game when there are regular payout tables just a few feet away?"

The answer is that they allow doubling on any first two cards at the 6:5 tables, while the regular single deck tables are limited to doubling on 10 and 11.

Of course, the 6:5 costs the player about five times the gain from the double any two rule. Like state lotteries, this appears to be another tax on people who are bad at math.

No, sir. The world's surliest, shuffle-happiest dealers were enough to keep me out of Circus Jerkus.

I was going to guess it was because they were giving away the plush eggplants and squids for suited blackjacks on the 6:5 tables, but your answer sounds more cromulent.

    Rock on.

Just over the last 4-6 months things have gotten steadily worse in Reno, especially downtown. Silv*r Leg has gone to all 6:5 except a couple $100 min tables, El D has Mind Play on their SD tables, Circ*s has a few 6:5, although they still have the most true SD tables. JA's has gone to D10 on all but their $25 and up tables, as has Atlant*s. Peppermill's rules are the same, but they are also still the most paranoid of the bunch.

I was at the Atlantis about 6 weeks ago, and they still had a *FEW* tables of single deck DOA $5+ (those closes to the buffet)...have they done away with these as well? Thanks in advance...

They may have changed, since the last time I played there was in early May. At that time, the only pit that was DOA was the high limit pit with $100 and $25 min tables (also has two roulette tables). The pit closest to the buffet was D10, but again, this may have changed. Also, they do have a couple $5 tables in the "Hi-Limit" pit, but they only open them when the place is busy, so they always have too many players for me.

It seems weird to have two sets of rules at the same table min, but this wouldn't be the first time that a casino did something weird.

Yeah, I was there over memorial day weekend and they had about three tables of $5 SD DOA open...you're right, they're usually pretty busy. The nice thing is that one of them is a non-smoking table, but again, always packed.

Going up this weekend - will post a message if anything's changed.
