BJinNJ: First Casino Foray...
Since I'm on vacation I decided to try out my
new 'skills' in Blackjack in AC today. I found
a $10 min table at the south end of the boardwalk,
at an 8D S17 table, and played one shoe. The pit
boss came up and started some small talk, while I
bought in for $150 or so. Pen was 75%.
My plan was to flat bet and strictly follow BS,
since I think I have BS down very well. I decided
to try and count, but if not able to do so it's no
big deal. I was not able to count fast enough, in
the final analysis. But counting is the weakest
part of my practice, so far.(count down a deck in 40
seconds)
I sat down at the beginning of a fresh shoe, and
the dealer burned an A. Immediately after, he left
the table and a new dealer came in and burned a J.
A BJ burned right off the top! But I stayed and
flat bet the entire shoe, anyway. Final result up
4 units, which covers my travel expenses.
I don't think I made any BS errors. I hit 12v2, and
9v2, and hit 3 naturals and pulled 2 more multicard 21s.
I split/resplit 6s to three hands and lost 2/3, and
doubled when called for by BS. Nothing unusual happened,
really.
All in all a good day at the beach. Good experience gained.

BJinNJ: Are dealers supposed to show you the burn card(s)?
I caught the value of both burn cards yesterday, but
they were really only quick flashes, and I was lucky
to catch their values.
If you're counting it can't hurt to know them.

In AC, the dealers frequently show them. If not, they will upon asking. If nobody else at the table asks, and a pit critter is not nearby, I'll ask. Otherwise I won't. While it's nice to know, how much difference does one card make in an 8D shoe? Just think of it as very slightly worse penetration.

Overall my 'live' skills check was encouraging.
You know how to get to Carnegie Hall...
practice, practice, practice.
Just got back from vacation. Was able to read
Blackwood's "Play Blackjack Like the Pros" and
Zender's "How to Detect Casino Cheating at Blackjack".
Blackwood's book is very nice. Zender's book was
interesting, but seemed to provide limited info.
