norman ray: Does hit/double and bust always lose?

    Dear All,
If you Hit or Double and bust (over 21, say 22), is it a sure loss?
Does the dealer need/must open his cards and be over 16?
If he does? What happens if he also bust (say 25)?
Is "bust 22" better then "bust 25" and you win?
    Many thanks,
    r.

    Yes.

No. If everyone at the table has busted, the dealer does not play out his hand.

    Doesn't matter. You've already lost.

Nope. Once you bust, you're done. Sorta like being "a little bit dead."

This is where the house gets most of its advantage - you play out your hand first. If you bust, you lose, even if the dealer subsequently busts.

There is a variant of Blackjack known as "21st Century Blackjack" that is offered in a few California cardrooms that has weird rules such as lowest busted hand wins, but in the traditional game as played in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and nearly everywhere else, the above is true.

Many thanks for clarifying that and the additional info.

I can tell you some more games where bust not always looses. I saw a promotion is South America where player 22 is not a bust and wins against dealer 22. this is very nice, you have an advantage of more than 5%.
there is a game called "Rummy" in central America where all triples (i.e. 666, 777, 888, etc) pay triple, including "bust" hands.
maybe you find more games...but it is not easy.

Dog Hand: One game where 22 does NOT bust the player...

    norman ray,

On 22 October 2007 "Cicero" started a thread on the International Page with the title "22 does not bust player!" about a BJ game in which a player's 22 is treated like a stiff hand, meaning if the dealer makes 17-21, the player's 22 loses, but if the dealer busts (even with 22 herself), the player wins. Search the International Page for the post by Cicero, then click the link below to find my calculations for that game.

...and no, I do NOT know where it is :-(

    Hope this helps!
