    Garfield: 8,8 v.A

Suppose a player splits his 8s against the dealer's Ace. On the 1st one he hits and gets 19, on the second the player hits (or doubles down) and busts.

    (i) If the player didn't insure, will he lose the second hand immediately?

(ii)What happens if the dealer gets BJ?

Most American casinos have "peeking" devices on the tables which allow the dealer to check for BJ before the players play out their hands. At these casinos, you know that the dealer does not have BJ before you play out your hand(s).

On tables without these devices, the dealer would not collect from the busted hand until he had checked for BJ. If he has a BJ, you only lose your original bet.

In European No-hole card games, you would lose both bets, which means that in these games one does not normally split pairs (or double down) vs. dealer ace.
