    Noobie: Smoke

Is there any way around the smoke in the casinos? I really can't stand it. This will sound really corny, but is there any hidden breathing apparatus or anything that can take away the negative effects second-hand smoke has on your health?

Places such as Sharper Image sell little ionizers that hang around your neck. I have no idea as to their effectiveness.

Many casinos, especially in California, now offer non-smoking areas with separate ventilation systems.

Newer casinos obviously have better ventilation than older ones.

BTW, please do not post using multiple usernames. Pick one and stick with it.

The legislature in New Jersey may force casinos in Atlantic City to go smoke-free. A legislative committee released a comprehensive indoor clean air building that includes casinos. The casino industry will likely fight it, disregarding the health and comfort of their employees and customers. What do you expect from the the people that give us 6:5 blackjack games?

I think if casinos went smoke free they would lose a ton of money so I doubt that would ever happen. But who knows.

I've seen people wearing the around-the-neck fans, and Parker mentioned personal ionizers. I have no idea how well these things work. I also recently saw, in the gift shop of a Vegas casino, a fan that you wear on your arm to blow the smoke away from you (i.e. back into the face of the person smoking). That may be more dangerous to your health than the second-hand smoke, depending on who's smoking next to you, though.

They may lose some money initially. Restaurants and bars have not lost money after the initial shock in states that made them go smoke-free. Neither have airlines, shopping malls, etc.

    >snip: Six or seven years ago as the state of California prepared to go smoke-free, it was predicted that the poker clubs would suffer great losses. As the date came, this was watched with anticipation and apprehension. It turned out to be something like Y2K. Nothing happened.

Shortly after, the Taj Mahal poker room in Atlantic City (75 tables) went smoke-free -- then the 54 table poker room at Foxwoods, CT. Soon, Bellagio and Mirage poker rooms joined in as well. Now, less than a decade later, virtually every significant poker room in the country is smoke-free. The non-smokers are grateful that they can breath, and many of the smokers appreciate having an external control that keeps them from smoking their brains out while enthralled in a poker game.

Thanks for the input guys. Let us hope that blackjack will soon follow the path of poker.
