el_jefe: deck thickness
Generally speaking, are decks of cards the same thickness at all casinos? Will quality playing cards from a store be about this same thickness? Thanks.

Wolverine: two words: gift shop
I purchase the actual casino cards right from the gift shops (sometimes, I even use a COUPON!) or a comp gift certificate. Then I have the actual cards used in a casino, no guessing.

There is some variation in card thickness. Some casinos use plastic coated cards which are slightly thicker. Cards sold in retail stores for home use are generally thinner than those used in casinos.
Finally, cards (at least the ones that are not plastic coated) tend to absorb moisture and swell slightly from use. That is, a deck that has been in play for several hours will be perceptibly thicker than one fresh from the box.
Fortunately, these variations aren't enough to significantly affect deck estimation.
The best place to get cards for practice purpose is from your local casino, where decks that have been used in play can usually be purchased cheaply from the gift shop (or gotten for free if you're on good terms with a host). If you don't have a casino nearby, cards from Las Vegas casinos may be ordered from Gambler's General Store (www.gamblersgeneralstore.com) for $.99 per deck, plus shipping.

Francis Salmon: Deck estimation
As Parker said, the card thickness varies and thats why have to take your measures once all the cards are placed in the discard tray in order to perform proper deck estimation during play.
Sometimes there are objects standing near the discard tray which might serve as a scale.

Thanks for the help. I wasn't sure if the differences in height I've noticed were real or just an illusion. I wish they would just make some notches in the discard tray corresponding to each deck. That would avoid any confusion

Yes, the notches would help...lol. They could also just have a running LCD counter letting all the players know how many cards are left in the shoe.

bfbagain: Use a ruler :-)
Actually, it's one of the easiest ways to train your desk estimation skills.
Most people have been trained using rulers their whole life.
A good starting point is 1 deck, which is very close (just ever so slightly more than) to 9/16".
Check it out.
cheers
