Victor Francis: Poker Book Question
I have a friend who is interested in Poker. I think he may be a natural. What is a good intro book?

Winning Low Limit Hold'Em, by Lee Jones, is a good start for beginners. It contains the poker equivalent of a "basic strategy" for low limit Hold'Em, which seems to be the game of choice these days. I'm in the process of reading it myself. It is, of course, available from our online catalog.

Also add Theory Of Poker. Reading and studying both of these books will give you a solid poker foundation.

"Hold'em Excellence: From Beginner to Winner" by Lou Krieger is another good starting book.
"Winning Low Limit Hold 'em (2nd ed.)" by Lee Jones is also very good as the others have posted.
If I had to choose only 1 book, I would go with the Lee Jones one.
Another suggestion (once the books are read) would be to go to PacificPoker.com and play their low-limit micro-limit games like $.10/.$20 or even .5/$1
Playing online you see twice as many hands per hour as live games, so you can learn and practice twice as fast. Also, the players at Pacific Poker are really bad, and at twenty cents max bet limit game, you aren't paying much for the lessons.

Thanks to all for their suggestions!

Also, I heard Matthew Hilger's book Internet Texas Hold 'em is supposed to be good. I am ordering that one among a few others including the Theory of Poker one. Some of the pros have said that it is easier to become a good poker player by starting out with Hilger's book instead of Lee Jones' but I don't know.
