Splitting tens is indeed a powerful play, ranking number 4 and 5 (against dealer 5 and 6 respectively) in Don Schlesinger's Illustrious 18 top indices. The Hi-lo true count indices are +5 and +4.

However, there is a common saying among pit personnel: "Nobody splits tens except idiots and card counters." The play is guaranteed to draw a lot of heat. So, unless your "act" is good enough to convince the pit boss that you are an idiot, you are better off not doing it.
