Modern Blackjack nth Edition

Having put out a 684 page book, I thought I had run out of Blackjack-related subjects. Particularly since I hate typing. But, the field seems inexhaustible. A forum doesn’t work too well as a repository. So, I thought I’d give blogging a shot.

This is a continuation of my book, Modern Blackjack, with some random musings and studies, generally on the subject of Blackjack. Feel free to add comments.

  1. Blackjack Dealer Hands by True Count

Page 466 of Modern Blackjack provides a chart on overall dealer hand totals and bust frequencies. But, I was recently asked for a chart that provides this information by true count. Why not?

I ran 21 sims, six-deck, S17, DAS, 75% penetration, six players using the Hilo card counting strategy. True counts of -120 through +10 were simmed. Six players were simmed to ensure that the dealer must nearly always complete her hand. Note: As explained on page 466, the number of players affects

  2. Musings: Don’t casinos know this stuff?

I received an e-mail from a major AC casino yesterday asking for the effect of the H17 rule. Not a complex new side bet, or esoteric rule, but one of the most common, published rules in the Blackjack world. I received an e-mail from a large Asian casino last week asking if I would analyze the play of a Baccarat player they believe was using a strategy from a popular Baccarat book. I didn’t respond as I don’t work for casinos.

But, what struck me odd is that major casinos would even

  3. The Effect of Ridiculous Players

The complaint from card counters is common: Stupid players are destroying the count. There is a high count, I bet large, and some player in front of me takes too many cards and ruins the count. It has been explained many times that, on average, this has no effect, and I will not repeat the explanation here. But, as is true so many times in Blackjack, there are exceptions.

In single-deck Blackjack, some casinos deal a fixed number of rounds, and some a fixed penetration. But, there are

  4. Is the Dravot Insurance Tweak Worth the Effort

This is for readers of Color of Blackjack as I will not discuss the contents of a copyrighted text until it becomes more common knowledge. Basically, the tweak is an improvement to insurance betting. The question – is there a gain and is it worth going after.

The sims are six deck, S17, DAS, 80% penetration, four players. Betting spread are 1-10, 1-15 and 1-20. System is Color of Blackjack. Tweak and no tweak are simmed:

  5. Lucky Ladies Using Insurance Side Count

This is an extension of the last post on Lucky Ladies. I received the following e-mail:

“I read your chapter on Lucky Ladies using the Hi-Lo system. When I play I count Hi-Lo and my friend uses the 10-count system (all cards +1 except 10′s are -2) for insurance purposes. Would the 10-count system be better for Lucky Ladies since it keeps track of all the 10′s?”

I know of people that use specialized side counts for LL, but have not heard of anyone specifically using an insurance
