Ouchez: A few thoughts on GTB and SC

when following the very interesting conversations concerning this topic on this great web site as well as on BJ21 one must keep in mind the tremendous marketing machine that Scoblete, along with his friends, have built in the last few years. They have gained great experience in their seminars on slots, comps, and craps, as well as general gambling. They have built up a large following of loyal customers. Now we come to a time when a major movie is being planned on the MIT team and counting that will fuel a new romance around this activity. Since Scobletes group appeals to the general population of casino goers a simple counting system, very simple, could have great appeal to these masses and at the same time make him and his friends a potential large amount of cash teaching it.

As far as marketing, appeal and following no one in the history of the gambling industry has even come close to the Scoblete machine.

It is also of great interest to note that Scoblete is now consulting with casinos, this they now admit, about what I do not know. But it does appear that he is not, in his consulting, acting in a "Game Protection" mode as he does seem to be an advocate for the common gambler as well as the advantage player. But I still find this new development of concern, I hope needless concern.

This new system may or may not help the average player who must pay a hefty fee to learn it.

My opinion is that this sytem will be a very weak and far less proficient system than Hi-Lo or any of the other powerfull counts that demand some mental exercise.

Although it will most likely be better than just 100% basic strategy.

Just my opinion, I may be wrong.

    Norm Wattenberger: On hype

In my mind, there exist four types of players:

[*]Pros[*]weekend warriors (advantage players that know their stuff and play for supplemental income or just for the joy of beating the house - but have other jobs.)[*]Tourists (people that set a loss budget and are there for entertainment. I won?t use the insulting term ploppies here because they are getting what they want.)[*]Problem gamblers[/list]

My problem is with the last group, and is why I have a link to Gambler?s Anonymous on every page of my website. One of the reasons that I have great respect for Arnold Snyder is that he tells everyone ?you will lose.? It?s an exaggeration, but a good one. I recoil from any text that claims that it is easy to beat the casinos. (Or easy to lose weight, get rich, look like a body builder, etc.) It is not easy. You cannot take a few hours instruction and walk straight to a casino and successfully play green. Unless you are a ?tourist,? you shouldn?t even get near a casino before you have spent a sleepless month practicing and can?t look at a license plate without subconsciously counting it. The strategy may very well work. But, hyped ads appeal mostly to the gambling addict.

Chicago Suntimes gambling columnist John Grochowski mentions Scoblete in his effort this morning. Is this part of the publicity machine you mention? And what can be simpler and easier than traditional counting methods and still get an edge over the casinos?

[I]Frank Scoblete and Dom LoRiggio, who have been teaching craps players their controlled roll method with Golden Touch Craps, have now teamed with Dr. Henry Tamburin and blackjack software developer Dan Pronovost to create Golden Touch Blackjack. Tamburin, author of Blackjack: Take the Money and Run, touts the method as simple, easier to learn than traditional card counting, but powerful enough to get an edge on the game. The Golden Touch crew will be giving seminars across the country, including June 19-20 at a site to be determined. For information, call (800) 944-0406 or write to Golden Touch Blackjack, Box 783, Lynbrook, NY, 11563.

Very few things are better than the Basic Strategy. Rest assured that Scoblete isn't one of them.
