    Anonymous: Does 18 v. 8 have a positive expectation?

I'm interested in the answer to this from a basic strategy perspective. In other words, if you have an 18 and the dealer has an 8 up, should you pull your bet back if given the option to (because of a dealer error, etc.), or should you play the hand out (standing, as prescribed by BS)?

In a 6-deck game, the hand T8v8 is quoted in Cacarulo's tables as having an edge of 10.4% for the player.

James Grosjean's book "beyond counting"has a section dealing with this topic and which hands to pull back or play. I truly beleive everyone should have a copy of his book.

According to Revere, you will get 18 vs 8 290 times out of 100,000 hands, and will win 28 units. It is a small advantage of 0.33%

Over on BJMath.com, there is a table that shows an expectation for every 2 card vs dealer upcard combination, for various games.

In a shoe game, you're a tad better than a 6-to-5 favorite with 18 against an 8. It's one of those hands that you can offer to buy from the player next to you by paying him say, $26 for his $25 hand. 19 against a playable 10 is another.
