    Getting Back In The Game

Hello, all. This is my first post here, really great site. I've had blackjack on hold for the last seven years, due mostly to hurricane Katrina messing up my happy hunting grounds and have been playing poker instead. The casinos are coming back but the good games haven't returned - 6:5 single deck, no mid shoe entry everywhere. Due to my impending retirement I will be able to travel more, so I am starting to knock the rust off and train again, using hi-lo, anticipating a return to the tables.

I have a question regarding counting speed. How fast can you guys count down a deck of cards, scanning them face up? Just looking to see where I stand and to have a target to shoot for.

Fanning a single deck out my count down time is right on 20 seconds. No warming up.
But I have other "weak spots" so don't get too focused on one area.

Whatever works for you and whatever you are comfortable with.

Much of it has to do with the particular game and the speed of the dealer.

You will get better in time and be sure to use cancellation.

I have been counting decks the last three days with no errors, and just clocked 23 seconds. Basic strategy is nearly instant with no errors, so in the next few days I'm going to practice 30 indices with flash cards until they are automatic. Then it will be deck estimation and true count drills. It's coming back to me fairly fast, so in 4 weeks or so I will try a low stakes practice trip. Starting to get excited now.

There are fewer good games out there now, but I have been noticing some beatable DD games while waiting for a seat to open up in the poker room. My plan is to take trips and play BJ and/or poker depending on the quality of the games.
