pnikola007: question from a blackjack rookie

i have couple of basic questions, besause, i'm just starting in blackjack.

    1. can i ask the dealer the number of decks the casino is using, or should i try to figure it out by my self, by looking at the size of the shoe?

    2. can anyone write me the correct starting counts for the ko count, by decks (1, 2 4, 6, 8), and the irc for the same number of decks?

    3. and finaly, in my country there are no any blackjack books, so can anyone, send me a e-book edition of the Knock-out blackjack. i'll write my email adress, if anyone is interested, or if i can get a link from i can download it.

    thank you

This is a reasonable question and should not draw any unusual attention. However, with a little experience you will easily be able to tell the number of decks by watching as the dealer loads the shoe, or by looking at the discard tray.

The IRC and the "starting count" are the same thing. The KO book standardizes to a Pivot Point of +4, so they would be 0, -4, -12, -20 and -28 for 1,2,4,6 and 8 decks respectively. Actually, they can be anything you want as long as the key count and pivot point are adjusted accordingly.

I'm not aware of an e-book edition of Knockout Blackjack being legally available anywhere. If anyone attempts to post a link to an illegal copy it will be deleted.

However, there is a lot of info (including chapter 5 of the book in its entirety) at the Knockout Blackjack website (link below).

If you're able to have blackjack books shipped to your country, Las Vegas Advisor has Knock-Out Blackjack for $3.00 (link below).

You can always make some stupid comment like "what is that... 12 decks or something??" less awkward, accomplishes the same task. It's true, you should easily be able to tell how many decks are in play. But that's a good one to keep in your back pocket... sometimes I'll pass by a fresh shoe at a new place and see low cards on the felt and start back counting without seeing the shuffle. The discard rack is often 8d regardless of how many decks are actually in play, and the shoes have different tilts from place to place. Out come the 12 decks...

What I do is call ahead of time if I'm unsure how many decks they are using... Usually if you call the casino you can get as much info as you want, just make sure its not the day you're going or they might be on the watch for you. I'll call up and ask how many decks they use, what the rules are (DAS, S17/H17, resplit aces, Late Surrender), you can even ask what the penetration is like... Not sure you'll get an honest answer but you can always try =)
