Norm Wattenberger: Atlantic City casino shut down

All casinos shut down a half hour ago due to the NJ budget impasse. No idea when they will reopen. Those of you that remember when the casinos shut down every night will remember the eerie look of a large closed casino. The bars remain open, so you can see the near empty floor of the casino with idled tables and slots. Feels like a science fiction movie.

I wonder how much money the casinos will lose per day as a result of the shutdown. Is this the first time something like this has happened in AC? I didn't realize the NJ Gaming Commission has THAT much power. This hurts the casinos more then any AP could ever dream!!!

Do you think AP opportunities will improve or deteriorate as a result of the shutdown? Perhaps when the casinos reopen they will desperately try and recuperate the lost revenue by providing free ace coupons, discounts on hotel, and lower table limits in hopes of bringing more people in.

The AC casinos haven't closed in 28 years despite floods, strikes and blackouts.

I saw this in the paper, but I couldn't figure out what the casinos have to do with the budget. I mean, I can understand shutting down government operations, but why casinos? Are the cocktail waitresses on the NJ state payroll?

But since the government does have that power, I think it's worth looking into setting up an AP PAC. It could help elect candidates who will selectively (preferentially?) shut down non-ap-friendly establishments.

The casinos cannot operate without casino control people on site and they work for the gov't. Funny thing, though, is they are paid by the casinos. Although the commission itself is probably closed.

Not so slight technicality: they are not paid by the casinos. They are paid by the state with the casinos' money.
