Order of dealer upcard and holecard?

In a real US casino, does the dealer get his upcard or holecard first?

I tried to check this in two scenes of the movie "21",
namely when Ben Campbell is tested in the Chinese
underground casino and when he plays his very first
session as a big player in LV (in the Red Rock casino).

I have the impression that the dealer initially draws both cards face down,
but turns his first card upside when drawing his second card,
and then places the first card face up on top of the second card,
which remains face down and is thus the holecard.

The same effect could be achieved easier by just
drawing the first card face up, and then drawing
the second card (face down) to the side or
    underneath the first card.

Is this true? Or does it depend on the casino?

    You should visit some time!

Today, the procedure varies widely. Traditionally, the dealer would deal his up card first, and slide the second card under it as the hole card. This had the considerable advantage of allowing players to start thinking about their play decisions as early as possible, thus helping to keep up game speed. Today, Bill Zender notwithstanding, many casino managers behave as if game speed is of no concern to them.

Some casinos now make the first card the hole card, and the second card the up card. This relieves the dealer from needing to develop the skill to protect the hole card while tucking it. However, this procedure can introduce other weaknesses that can be exploited by honest or dishonest players. I'll say no more on that subject.

Alternatively, some casinos make the first card the up card, but they don't flip it up until after the second card, the hole card, is dealt. Again, this relieves the dealer of the task of tucking.

Yes, indeed I should. But a visit should be well prepared, and I had no glue because in Europe there is no hole card which I could watch...

And yes, the last procedure was the one shown in the movie "21".
So there are different manners to draw the dealer cards.

Many thanks for your insightful answer!

At least in the Midwest, H17, during shoe games the upcard is dealt first and then flipped over the hole-card. During pitch games, however, the upcard is dealt first FACE-UP and the hole-card is dealt last, tucked under the already exposed upcard.

I realize that my answer is the same as above, but repitition, in this case, couldn't hurt. Happy hunting!

I have always seen the upcard dealt first, face down, with shoes. There is one exception. Riverboats in MO (and perhaps some in IA as well, my memory is a bit fuzzy) deal the upcard up immediately.

Yes, there is never too much information regarding these things. Thanks!

I haven't found any particular standard. Even on the Strip you can cross the street and they do it differently there.
