    7up: Post deleted?

I posted a link of a video clip, which is a speech of Bill Benter on gambling, now is gone.
    What happened?
I think many advantage players are interested in a guy who won over 100,000,000.00 USD on advantage gambling.

I generally frown on posts containing nothing but a link, as they are usually nothing but a promotion of some sort.

However, I deleted your post because the link was broken - it went nowhere.

But it worked for me. It was a rather boring 36-minute clip of Benter speaking to the International Conference of Chinese Mathematics 2004 in Hong Kong. He spoke of the history of gambling and its role in the development of probability theory. There was a short Q&A afterward.

I didn't watch the last five minutes or so, but I saw no promotional content of any kind. It was more like watching a video of a college professor droning on about the dry stuff. Boring slide-show included. Benter essentially read from it, which I thought was pretty funny. If the Chinese paid for him to speak, they were robbed.

At least I know what the guy looks like now. He did mention reading BEAT THE DEALER in the 60s, then heading to LV to become a professional BJ player. He also touched on his method for beating Asian horse-racing.

Sounds like a sensible policy in general, although when I clicked on the link earlier today it connected to the video clip (if a media lasting ~35 mins can be called a clip) without any problem. Of course, the host of the clip might have just taken the video down. Who knows.

It was an interesting lecture, in particular his section horse race betting. In fact I was moved to hunt down some papers on estimating probit models in this area as a result. I dont think his slides on blackjack, interesting though they were, would be teach much to most readers of these pages.

Maybe 7up could find a repaired link and post again with a little more explanation about what its linking to? Im sure the clip would be of interest to APs in general, if not counters in particular. Maybe it would be better in a different place?

    Kind regards

It would appear that one man's "interesting lecture" is another man's "drone". :-)

I might need to get out more...

    Kind regards

    Saboteur: Ha! :) :)

Well, I did watch the entire lecture, so it couldn't have been too bad. I admit that the slide depicting the overlapping probabilities of each horse winning the race intrigued me.

I just kept getting the notion that, for most of his talk, Benter was "preaching to the choir". His audience surely must have already known 98% of what he covered.

Okay, I figured out what happened. The link was to a Windows Media Video clip. Since I'm running a non-Windows operating system (Linux), I don't have anything to support this, and thus get an error message when I click on the link.

My apologies to 7up -- I certainly do not wish to discourage anyone from contributing interesting content to the website.

However, in addition to my own problem with the link, I imagine that it would be a strain to someone with a slow dialup connection.

As I mentioned earlier, I generally don't like posts that contain only a link. What the general public does not see is that I often delete several of such posts in a day, usually from online casinos, porn sites, or some site pretending to be informational when it actually is just a bunch of affiliate links.

In that case, a hearty thanks and please do keep up the good work. I wondered why these boards stayed so free of the usual nonsense.

Praying Mantis: Since When is the Rules...

of the game to Get as close to 21 without going over? Is this good info he's putting out? Sounds like the stuff casinos tell their marks.

I always thought the rules of the game was to simply beat the dealer.

Well, that's the goal. Good to know that someone noticed.
