    Don Schlesinger: Times change

We all need to keep up on the changing correctness of expression.

Once upon a time, the capital of China was Peking. Now, that's a duck, and the capital is Beijing.

Once upon a time, a sheik was a "sheek"; now he's a "shake."

Once upon a time, blacks were Negroes or, um, blacks. Now, they're African-Americans.

And, once upon a time, people who came from the Far East were Orientals. Now, they're Asians.

You can probably think of a million more examples.

Don Schlesinger: Oh, yes, of course ...

... once upon a time the first people to inhabit our land were Indians. Now they're Native americans.

Once upon a time the people who lived in igloos were Eskimos. Now they're Inuits.

And on and on and on.

Careful, man. You may pull off a good 'Bono' disguise, but this little Asian hottie may just be a shill for Griffin intent on photographing you au naturel. I'd recommend wearing a fright mask & be ready to throw her out if she brings up making a video of the encounter "just for the two of you"...

    i got your back, man.

    Parker: Disagree

A civilian is anyone in the casino who is not an advantage player or casino employee.

A ploppy is a particularily obnoxious and clueless type of civilian.

A civilian may play perfect basic strategy. Ploppies never play basic strategy because they have their own systems that are infinitely better (according to them) than basic strategy.

Ya but a couple of years back we called them all civilians and the ploppy term has just recently taken a foot hold. SM

    Clown: except in the UK...

...where an "asian" is a person of Indian/Bangladeshi/Pakistani decent, and anyone from the far east (China/Japan/Vietnam) is an "Oriental".

Also I discovered in the UK it is quite acceptable to describe a person of mixed race as "half caste". Is this socially acceptable in the US?

The caste system was never used in America the way it was in the UK's strongholds, so I doubt anyone would understand the term if you used it. Years ago, it was acceptable to use "octaroon" to describe a person as one-eighth black, "mulatto" for a person with one white and one black parent, and a "maroon" for a fugitive slave or free black of the 17th and 18th century. That last term was generally geographically limited to certain "tribes" in the West Indies, Guyana, and later southern Florida. All totally unacceptable today.

Is it racist to call a Chinese/Japanese/Vietnamese "Oriental"?

It's no longer "correct." They're Asians.

I'll be in a negative count then someone flat betting will throw a stack out. I'll wonder if my count is wrong or what system the guy is using. Now I know.
