    Bettie: Great Gambling Quote

Found a book of gambling quotes in a used bookstore not long ago, and I was thumbing through it just now. I stopped at a quote from Nick "The Greek" Dandalos, who died penniless in 1966:

"The next best thing to gambling and winning is gambling and losing."

Now that's a guy who loved to gamble!

Yeah, he may have had a little problem - after all, he died broke. But would you have thought that he needed help if he had died a millionaire? In general, do we consider someone a good gambler because they win and a bad one because they lose? I can think of a dozen people I know off the top of my head who consistently win, but I would most definitely say that they had a problem.

What do you mean consistantly win, but have a problem? Advantage players that gamble on other games?

    Bettie: For example...

    > What do you mean consistantly win, but have
    > a problem? Advantage players that gamble on
    > other games?

Yeah - they go into a casino and know exactly what to play and exactly how to play it, but I'll find them on games with a house edge. They admit they know that other games are better, but kind of shrug it off. I just don't understand. I play when I have an advantage, period.

I also know pro vp players who play only with an advantage, can play the exact strategy without even thinking about it, and yet insist on feeding the machine to keep the credit meter at a certain high read so that the coins drop more, honestly believing that it helps improve the win. They know the math cold, and yet still buy into these superstitions - and worse, spread their beliefs to other, more naive players.
