    16 vs dealer 10 - advanced playing deviation on the first hand of a shoe ONLY

    I happened upon this surrealist humour video:

    In it, the protagonist plays a hand of blackjack where he has a 4 and 6 against a dealer 10. He hits and receives a 6; he now has the dreaded 16 vs dealer 10. He hits again and receives another 6 for a bust. I was about to leave a comment on the video that he should have stayed because the count was +2.

    Then I stopped and thought about it some more. True, under every counting system that I know of, a 10, 6, 4, 6 would have resulted in a positive count, which would call for a stay under its playing deviation index. But forget about all that and just think about all the cards on the table in more simple terms:
    10 - bust card
    6 - bust card
    4 - NOT a bust card
    6 - bust card

    So 3 bust cards are out of the shoe, and only 1 non-bust card. Therefore, he was right to hit, despite the count being positive.

    Because we all don't have Rainman-esque photographic memories, we need to assign point values to each card rather than perform complex analysis like this for each playing decision. But on the very first hand of the shoe, it IS actually very easy to perform the optimal analysis for this common matchup.

    So I propose the following playing deviation, to be applied to a 16 vs dealer 10 matchup on the very first hand of the shoe, no matter what kind of counting system you're using: Throw the running count out the window and simply look at all the cards on the table. If more than 50% of the cards on the table are 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 (bust cards), hit. Otherwise stay. Of course, this would be more valuable in single and double deck games than shoes.

    Are you aware of the concept of composition-dependent basic strategy? You might want to google it if not as it seems to be roughly what you are getting at.

    Normal basic strategy is based on a player's point total and the dealer's visible card only. Composition-dependent strategies include information about the composition of the hand as the name implies.


    Perhaps you're unaware of the fact that BS is to stand on multi-card 16.

    16 vs T is a play that the basic strategy player has always wanted to perfect. Normally, we know that with a 16 composed of two cards, we usually hit,
    and with three or more cards, we usually stand. I also vaguely remember that there were authors who analyzed different compositions,
    reaching conclusions about when to hit or stand based on certain patterns, such as whether the hand contains 5s or not.

    At one point I simplified composition dependent basic strategy versus up card of ten for 1 to 8 decks using total dependent basic as a reference. Not sure if I missed anything if anyone cares to check.

    I guess the OP is thinking:

    When playing a 16 against a dealer's 10, using a multi-card basic strategy might not be correct in every situation. So, he created a "16v10 bust count system", where a bust card counts as +1, a non-bust card counts as -1, and hit whenever RC is greater than 0 on the table.

    His question would be: Will this counting system improve results compared to the basic strategy?
    (In this 4,6,6 case, he is right!)

    How about comparing the 3~5-card "all stand" to the "bust count", to see which one is better?

    The 16vT stand with 3 or more cards exception has been considered a part of basic strategy by some sources for ages. Indeed, it has been in my software since the first version in 1993.
