your point seemed valid to me for a while - it seemed like a split bet should pay 17.5/1, not 17/1 for the house edge to be the same a straight bet paying 35/1
then, I finally figured it out - you hit 2 split bets in a row - you get 17/1 plus your $10 back on each bet - you now have $360 - the same as you have after winning your $10 straight bet on one number
per wiki - see link - there is a short pay in roulette -
a top line bet on a double zero wheel on 0,00,1,2,3 carries an expected value on a $1 bet of -0.079
on every other roulette bet on a 2 zero wheel it is -0.053 -
on a single zero wheel the expected value of a $1 bet is -0.027 on every single bet -
kinna interesting roulette trivia - to me anyway

I'm asking about the EV not the house edge. If I place a $10 wager on the number 1, and hit I profit $350. 2.7 percent chance. If I place the bet in the middle of 1 and 2.... I still have a 2.7 percent chance to hit 1. If I hit, payout is $170. If on the next spin I hit the 2, I get another $170. That's $340 total. So I have a 2.7 percent chance to hit either the 1 or the 2 - resulting in a total of $340 for every two times I hit. It's still less than $350 I get for playing the $10 on number 1 alone. Seems to me like the odds to split the numbers should be 17.5 to 1 if the EV is equal. So it it is, explain to me how it's not 17.5 to 1 instead of 17 to 1
my last try to explain it
you bet $10 on a split bet - you win $170 and get your $10 back - you now have a total of $180
you win again on a split bet - you win $170 and get your $10 back - equaling $180
you now have $360 - the same as you have after winning a $10 bet on one number
what you are missing - you are getting a full refund of $10 on the split bet even though half of the bet is a loser
you get a full refund on a straight bet but none of your bet is a loser
the EV is the same - see linked chart from Wiki

Bro....
We both have $10.
I bet my $10 on 1 and get paid $350. I now have $360
You bet your $10 on a split of 1 and 2. You hit the number 1. You get $170. Add that to your original $10 you now have $180. You take $10 out of the $180 to place your 2nd bet. You hit again. You get paid $170. You know have $180 to go with the other $170. A total of $350. The only way you get $180 twice if you start with 2 separate $10 bets.
.
Apex:
you're going to hate the corner bet in roulette (any 4 adjoining numbers in a block) even a lot more
it pays only 8/1
4 times 8 equals 32
nowhere close to the 35/1 profit on a single number
but the EV is the same - believe it or not
The payout for a single number is 35 times the bet. If you place $1 on each of 2 numbers then when you win on one of the numbers, you win $35-1=34
that is exactly the same as what you would win if you placed one $2 split bet
