Wall Street Journal article on casinos

Why You’re Losing More to Casinos on the Las Vegas Strip

Front page article today. Gambling companies shift betting further in their favor, raising minimums at blackjack tables and tipping the odds in roulette. Basically it says that they are interested in big spenders and that shift is not reducing visitors.

I read this. Since the revenue from BJ games only, and only on the strip, was almost $1 Billion in 2022 (per Nevada Gaming Commision), there's not a lot of incentive for casino management to back off on the rules. I don't know if the increase in tourism in Vegas is due to a rebound effect from covid, but until the revenue starts dropping I'm guessing the casinos won't budge. My personal experience in Vegas is that the strip casinos are relatively empty daytime during the week. Whereas, the off-strip casinos are a lot busier, usually due to locals. Obviously the bulk of the revenue comes in on the weekends.

I had to laugh when they quoted some casino exec as saying they wanted to cater to a higher level of clientele, thus the higher table limits. It'd be interesting to see a breakdown of revenue from the different table minimums. Is it the masses at the $25 tables or the few at the $100 tables producing the most income?

Heck, its not only the brick and mortar casinos that are tightening up. Caesars online in MI has really tightened up their promotions. Last year most of their promotions required a 50 time play thru. Then they went to a 75 time play thru and just a few days ago they they went to a 125 time play thru on blackjack. I usually don't read all the fine print on a promotion because most of the time it stays the same. However, I was playing a Caesars promotion a few days ago and was wondering why it was taking so long to complete it. Then I looked at the details. It went from 75 to 125 time play thru. Well, if there is any good news I have won 43 out of the last 46 times I played Caesars promotions. Right now I'm up over $6,000 for the year at this casino. Wonder how long that will last at the new play thru rate.

To top matters off Draftkings just offered a Kickoff to summer promotion for the Memorial Day weekend that wasn't even positive expectation. Play $25,000 for 50 free credits. A losing deal for the player.

I was waiting for you to tell Midwest Player that he should permanently leave Michigan to punish Draftkings for their hubris ;-)

Nah, then he'd have very little to complain and post about if it wasn't for his 8 month winter.

    .

hard to believe roulette tables filled up with a double zero wheel - players bucking a 5.26% HA

I guess the people that play roulette just don't care - they see it as entertainment - something I can't see at all

now 3 zeroes - unreal - maybe next they'll pay the players just 25/1 instead of 35/1 when they hit a number - yeah, that's the ticket

the yahoo article in the other thread stated that they had almost as many 3 zero wheels now as 2 zero ones

what will the Casino Masterminds come up with next - stay tuned - sports bets paying off at 10/12 instead of 10/11______?_________no more free odds at craps______?_______no reason to be so generous

Casinos are no different than tobacco companies. They profit off the stupid, the poorly educated, and those with addictive personality disorder.

So do most other businesses. Have you seen the mark-up from wholesale to retail prices?

You're missing my point. Most businesses don't ruin people's lives. But in all fairness to them, they do what the market accepts.

Nobody is forcing the suckers into casinos. They CHOOSE to ruin their own lives.
