Tough day for me today. Off the ladder and into the snow I went and couldn't get up.

Okay, here is the story. I went out to shovel after the storm today, hoping to get most of the shoveling done. I shoveled the porch and steps and then did my path which had about a foot of snow on it. It was then I noticed a window shutter was only hanging by one screw. On Christmas Eve we had terrible winds like 60 mph from one source. I figured the winds knocked it loose.

I decided to investigate more, so I had to shovel about a 15 foot path just get to it. I figured I would pull it off, but lo and behold the vinyl siding came with it. The top row of siding right under the eve came off with the shutter. I decided to get the ladder out and check it out more closely. I went up the ladder and noticed there was house wrap under the siding so figured it can wait till spring to get fixed. I then came down and moved the ladder a little bit to get a look at the other end. This time when I was coming down I couldn't feel the next rung in the ladder where the rungs on the ladder go from two to one.

Since I was only about three feet above the snow I decided to jump off the ladder. I jumped and immediately fell over into the snow. I couldn't get up. I couldn't even crawl as there was no support for the arms. They would just sink into the snow. I was only about 4 feet from the ladder and ended up rolling in the snow over to the ladder to have something to hang onto to pull my self up. I wasn't hurt, but didn't feel like shoveling anymore, but did mange to shovel out the door of the car and the exhaust pipe on the car so I can start it. Chalk up my first fall of this winter.

To the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies theme:

Come and listen to my story about a man named MWP
A poor yooper, barely kept himself snow-free,
And then one day he was playing online blackjack,
And up through his monitor come a big chip stack.

Credits that is, black chips, Vegas tea.

Well the first thing you know MWP's a millionaire,
The online folk said move away from there
Said "Californy is the place you ought to be"
But he'd rather shovel snow than move to Beverly

Picture from the U.P. of our Christmas Eve storm. My outside car was actually buried worse than the cars in this picture. I still don't have it completely shoveled out. Yesterday had freezing rain to deal with. Can't compete with Buffalo, but we will probably end up with more snow than Buffalo by the time winter is over. Already have 107 inches for the year.

Climate change isn't all bad! It's certainly put me in a better than usual winter mood.

I won't be singing the same tune once the mass flooding starts, but in the meantime....

    Winter Update:
So far this winter has been pretty mild and really not that much snow. Each month had a week of heavy snow, then not much in between. We had a good several days of snow in mid Nov, then a week of snow for our Christmas Eve storm, and then a week of snow at the end of January.

Okay, its now February's turn. Yesterday we got over 6 inches of snow as an appetizer for the main course which is suppose to arrive tomorrow. There are now 8 weather alerts in effect for the U.P. and northern WI. They are predicting up to 10 inches or more of snow for tomorrow, and we aren't even in the bullseye of the storm. Hope this is it for awhile.

Okay, there is just one more storm to get through in our trilogy of storms, and that is "Piper" which is suppose to hit us on Monday. The last couple were not too bad and the majority of the last one went south of us, but I do think just about every school in the U.P. was closed this last Thursday.

Now the good news. In between all the snow shoveling, I managed to get my income taxes done for 2022. The last of my taxes was accepted by the government on Friday Feb 24th. Last year I didn't get them done until March 3rd. I will be getting over $10,000 back as I didn't win as much as I planned for in blackjack. Anyway, I told my wife if I have a heart attack shoveling out from "Piper" she won't have to deal with the income taxes.

And even better news. I'm finally in the black again at my gambling for 2023. In the last two weeks I won almost $10,000.

The government thanks you for providing them with a nice, interest-free loan.

Nay, that's nothing. Here is something to rattle your feathers. In fact, it is starting to rattle mine.

I might of mentioned this before. I have two checking accounts. One is used just for my gambling transactions, and the other is my personal checking account used for everything but gambling. At the end of last year, I had over $50,000 in each of them earning just 0.02% interest. In the past, I didn't care much because all short term investments were paying zip. However, that is no longer the case. At Schwab a one year CD now pays over 5%, and a money market account pays around 4.5%. I still have a lot in my two checking accounts earning just about zip. I did move some out of my gambling account at the start of the year, and I will be moving more out soon. I still don't know what is a good amount to keep in my checking account. I want to always have at least enough for 6 months living expenses.

Did it ever occur to you that you can simply transfer money out of the high-interest accounts and into your checking as needed? ALL brokerages like Schwab, Fidelity, and Vanguard, have MM accounts that have checking privileges.
