This hand depends on whether it is hit-17 or stand-17. For a counter, you can mostly double down when TC +0.

    PocketacesinND,

Basic Strategy for A8 vs. 6 depends on how the dealer plays soft 17: for Stand soft 17, B.S. is to stand; for Hit soft 17, B.S. is to double down.

If you are counting cards, the index to DD on A8 vs. 6 also depends on the dealer's soft 17 action. For S17, the HiLo index is +1, so you should DD if the TC is +1 or higher; for H17, the HiLo index is 0, so you should DD if the TC is 0 or higher.

You mentioned in another thread that the game you're playing is 6D S17, so your B.S. play is to stand on A8 vs. 6, and your HiLo play is to DD if the TC is +1 or higher, otherwise stand.

    Hope this helps!

Yes - there are 6 changes when you from S17 to H17. Three more doubles: 11vA, A7v2, and A8v6. Three more surrenders: 15vA, 17vA, and 88vA.

I thought you were asking if we actually make this move A8v6, since dealers often question it, “Sir, that’s 19 - are you SURE you want to double?!”. Anyway, I ALWAYS politely double A8v6 when it’s the better move.
