Are phones allowed at your Local Blackjack Tables?

Someone said that phones are NOT allowed at their Local Blackjack Tables to deter Cheating. I feel that banning phones at Blackjack Tables is a bad idea due to People needing their phones for emergencies/urgencies. I feel a happy Medium would be requiring phones to be face up so the Dealer can see you are NOT using it to cheat.

I've not heard of a casino not allowing a phone in your pocket. OTOH, most casinos bar anything on the table. Clearly anything with a reflective surface is banned.

The casinos are afraid that people might run card counting apps in their cell phone.

You are always allowed to step away from the table to take a call. Many counters do this in order to walk away from a bad count, once they've used their "bathroom break" excuse. This led to one of the more embarrassing moments I've had at the tables.

I was in the high-limit pit at Caesars A.C., which is somewhat buried in the inner recesses of the casino floor. During a very negative shoe, I made believe I had a call (phone on vibrate in the pocket) and stepped away from the table. I stood there till the shoe was done making believe I was talking to someone. When I went back to the table, the pit boss asked me what carrier I had for the phone, since no one ever has any cell service in that pit! I forget what I said, but I don't know whether he bought it or not. Maybe he did, since no one bothered me the rest of the way. Moral? Check your phone for service bars before you employ this tactic!

You may have misunderstood what was meant by "not allowed". Most casinos I've been to won't let you use the phone at the table, but as others have mentioned you're allowed to have the phone with you and step away for a call.

One weird exception is one of my local stores recently opened a sports book. I've noticed the blackjack dealers there have been letting players use phones recently to engage in sports betting even when a hand is in play.

Not at all. A cell phone can be used as a camera device to spot the dealer hole card or to track a shuffle. Nothing to do with counting apps. Any serious player who would need a counting app is FAR FROM A THREAT to the casinos.

Go to Colombia then. You can use your cellphone to your heart's delight while playing. You can also wear headphones and call the dealer a puta all day long. Hard to imagine many casinos here would put up with patrons calling their dealers whores all day long.

There was some casino paranoia when a counting app came out for the iPhone. Silly as the app didn't even count correctly.

Two or three times I've been asked to turn my phone around when it was in my breast pocket because the camera happened to be pointing out. Of course now most cell phones seem to have cameras on both faces so wonder if I'll be asked to turn the phone upside down next.

Card counting apps are FAR FROM A THREAT to the casinos? What about a shoe computer program to count cards and steer aces?
