In recent times several large US corporations have stated their intention to break up their conglomerates in favour of multiple smaller companies specialising in their respective markets. Examples are General Electric and Johnson & Johnson. My question is why are long standing organisations doing this and what is the benefit to their consumers and shareholders?

Interested to hear people's opinions on this matter...

Good. GE has to do this. Once a great company founded by Edison. Got killed going into an area without experience at the wrong time. Also, too conservative decades ago. They spent decades and piles of money to keep halogen headlights illegal in the US as Europe moved on. The US lack of investment in rail didn't help. I hope specializing works for them.

J&J is different. Some stories I won't tell in public 'cause I'd get sued. But, I think their breakup works. Someone selling band aids and baby powder (oops cancer) and oxycontin (tens of thousand of deaths a year) would benefit by creating specialized companies.

No one is forcing these companies. I do believe that many large companies should be broken up. I'm tired of companies buying each other. Doesn't ever seem to help consumers or workers. I'd love to see Las Vegas casino companies broken up.

Yeah, Qfit is just getting too big and unwieldy.

Well, I splitting into QF and IT.

Funnyish thing, I just clicked on your post from my email and it brought up Edge instead of Chrome. Windows updated last night and changed many of my defaults to their products. I couldn't even respond to you without remembering how to fix the damage Microsoft did to my system; and they keep changing how to make changes such that all of their documentation is incorrect. This is the evil of these companies. It is My PC. I paid a lot of my money for it. They think they know I want to use all of their products instead of the ones I chose.

Interesting about GE as we don't hear much about it in Australia.

JNJ used to be a revered company whose products were always trusted by consumers but they seem to have lost their way. Warren Buffet sold out some years ago citing too many mistakes so that points to poor leadership. I think the talc and opioid law suits are weighing down the share price as it's only grown marginally compared to the S&P 500 over the last few years despite solid earnings. The talc issue may not be their fault since a third party supplier provided it but they are responsible. It may also be the case that big pharma is a magnet for lawsuits as they are generally cashed up.

It seems to be a cycle where, over time, small businesses grow in order to stay competitive but eventually get to a size where they become too difficult to manage so they split up again. It will be interesting to watch what happens with the big tech corporations in the future.

For now, I don't see any need to break up Qfit.

Have you considered alternatives? Apple? Unix? GNU/Linux? I'm sure there is something out there for you...

Apple is worse. No interest in Unix. Even the server for this site is MS. $40 a month to lease Windows OS, not counting hardware.
    alone.

I don't know what you're doing with the back end but...40 bucks a month to lease an OS? I take it you get a shit-tone of goodies along with that rental. Has MS jacked their licensing fees too much to purchase?

For a cloud environment, Windows Server costs $6,155 for 16 cores. I lease for four cores at $10 a month per core. Costs almost as much as the hardware. Linux is free. But, I have back-end stuff that requires Windows.

Cloud environment is great though. Fire a bullet into a disk drive, and it is automatically replaced with no human intervention and without the site going down. Fire a bullet into the CPU, RAM, or motherboard, and the site will go down for several minutes and come back up with no human intervention. Another $100 a month, and most sites will stay up after a nuclear attack.
