Trip update- 3 days and some 1100+ miles later.

I decided to post a new thread.

The original plan was to go see Utah, having already been to Rocky Mountain National park last summer with family plus a couple of trips to Black Hawk, Co. Had been up Pike’s Peak and Garden of the Gods. I had planned to get to Colorado Springs then head west through Gunnison and Monarch Pass to Grand Junction and Moab, UT. Then spend a couple days seeing Utah parks.

The reality was different. On Monday, I left St. Louis, drove through the state past Kansas City all the way to Colby, KS. About 600 miles. A great day till it got very cold. Tuesday morning found a coating of snow on my car. On I-70, it was empty of traffic, guess people were waiting till the bright sun would melt the overnight frost on the road. The news said “Icy patches”. In any case, sun out, weather good, I made it to Colorado Springs on Day 2.

There I was informed that the forecast was intermittent snow up in the passes, I-70 had been closed due to multiple accidents near Denver. I was told that Colorado traction laws were in effect, that you had to have all wheel drive, snow tires and carry chains.

At the hotel, a fellow traveler looked at my car, shook his head, I had rear wheel drive. He then showed me cotrip.org through which you could see live cameras on the roadways. It looked snow packed over the route I had chosen. I had just checked the weather in cities but mountain passes were a different issue.

After some thought. This morning I headed to Salida over US50, awesome drive. I then headed south to Alamosa, Co. lunch there, I was planning Taos but drove to Santa Fe. Today was the very best day. I had lived briefly in White Rock, NM and Los Alamos, NM. My daughter was 6 then, is 27 now. She wants me to get pictures of places like our old apartment complex sign and her Elementry School. After that, I am either going to head west to Zion Natl park or head home via Rte 66.

Saw lots of casino signs, even here in NM but am not prepared to risk my life. While it’s been fun, It could have been a whole lot better but for this damn virus. I like eating in locals places, maybe an hour or two at a bar, mostly conversing with people. I didn’t do any of that.

Thats it for now. I made stops, gas or meal, at some of these places so far...St. Louis, Kansas City,Topeka, KS, Colby Ks, Limon, Co, Colorado Springs, Co, Salida, Co, Alamosa, Co and Santa Fe.

Are you eating in restaurants or getting takeout to eat in your hotel room or solo elsewhere?

Zion is one of my favorite parks. About 6 years ago, I did the Angel's Landing hike, which is rated one of the scariest hikes in the US. There were defintiely some scary spots, inching along a narrow ledge with a 2000 ft drop on one side, and pulling yourself up rocks with the help of chains attached to the cliff walls.

Enjoy the rest of your trip.

    Wow, impressive.

In some ways, the trip was a bad idea. For one, I was too scared for restaurants, bars and casinos so I ate in drive thru or carry out or delivered. Meals, so lonely travel.

I usually enjoy people watching in restaurants in the little towns and road side diners. Me checking out the locals and the travelers, they checking out this brown person all by himself. Sometimes, someone is curious and asks where I am from, etc. It ends in a nice conversation and I learn a bit of the area. This does not happen in more diverse places and big cities.

Back in the 70’s, somewhere in a diner in the OK or Texas areas. A waitress asked me where I was from. Since in those days my country was not well known, I said “near India”. She says “that must be a long drive, huh?”. At another place, I responded to the same question with “I am an Indian” and she says “what kind?” and I say “ Apache”, she goes off behind the bar, a few glances from a cook and another waitress and she returns, says “You are no Indian, you have curly hair”, lol.

I like this "no BJ" trip report.
It's entertaining and refreshing for me who didn't travel since last March.

Zee - You do get some snow in STL, right? So how is it you have a RWD car and no snow tires?

It is. I had to cancel a planned family trip last April because of this mess. My first out of town trip since this mess started was a week or 2 ago. Wife and I stayed overnight so we could do some visiting. I managed 1 session (where I’m being tracked no less), and hadn’t played there since early this year or late last year.

My sons and grandsons and I are taking a boys weekend next month. It’s mostly for the grandsons so they can have some good fun. I’m prepared to cancel that trip if necessary. In any event, I’ll leave some extra cash for the wife so she can take out my daughters in law and grand daughter.

I got the Nissan 370Z, my wife has the electric Nissan Leaf and my son, who lives at home, commutes to school has a Hyundai Elantra.

It snows very little and me being retired, my rear wheel car stays parked. If I need to go, I can borrow one of the others. I have an affinity for low coupes but with age, it became difficult to get into a corvette or a Miata. Cant afford the Porches and other European ones.

Great trip! This forum should change its name to "nottheblackjackforum.com" I also have not been to a casino since February. I would really like to go, but I am really rusty and the virus is surging again! I am curious how you got to visit these other states without having a covid test? My state won't allow out-of-state travelers to visit without getting tested first.

How do they enforce that? Are there state police checkpoints at all roads leading in?

I really am not sure. I know that at airports they do control who arrives. I heard not recently that air traffic to our largest airport is down greatly. The state has said that there is a fine for those who do not follow the rules. So, maybe the state police are doing random checks pulling people over? Rhode Island (not my state), earlier in the year, set up a checkpoint for travelers arriving via I-95. They have a small border overall so it is possible to do. Some people claimed that it was illegal, but they continued on with it. I am not sure if it still stands.

Well, I made it back home, doing 2223 miles in 5 days. The last portion of the drive was through Oklahoma on I-44. This state seems to have more casinos than Nevada.....a billboard every few miles. Didn’t stop in any, though. Still mulling a return to the tables but Covid rates are sky rocketing everywhere.

Maybe casinos will offer free Vaccinations to Zplayers Card holders, huh!

As regards Oklahoma, if casinos are doing fine while charging an ante to play Blackjack, how long before Las Vegas starts requiring an ante?
