    1. Don’t use BJ hi lo indices for Spanish. I understand what you’re doing, but it will give you variance headaches. Spanish has its own set of indices.

    2. Everyone’s brain is wired differently. What you consider difficult is really simple for me. And for the amount of Spanish I play, which is now negligible, I’m not interested in reinventing the wheel. A few years ago, I probably would have been.

someone can correct me if I’m wrong - Katarina was a mathematician and simulated everything. They’re better Spanish count systems today, but Katarina’s work was groundbreaking for its day. Further, both Don and Norm can confirm or deny, but I believe Katarina collaborated with both of them as well as others during the construction of her book.
A couple of corrections in your statements.

    1. I said to add four to Katarina's published Spanish 21 indices and then us my TCRC to make playing strategy and betting decisions based on these actual true count indices. I never said to use BJ indices for Spanish 21. Where did you get that idea?

    2. I said if you like to start at -24 for six decks or -32 for eight decks and do all of the extra calculations then fine. Continue to do what you do then. I specifically said I am not going to tell you what to do. Stick with what you are comfortable with.

What I did say was that for me I want to make things as simple as possible and do as few calculations as possible. So I start at zero, add 4 to Katarina' indices to get the actual HL true count indices and use the TCRC to find the true counts for betting and playing strategy changes.

Attached is the six deck and eight deck TCRC for an unbalanced count with a pivot of a true count of four such as Katarina's HL for Spanish 21 or KO for blackjack.

There are many patterns in the TCRC which makes it easy to remember. I quick look at the TCRC and the patterns are obvious.

So tc = true count, dp = decks played, n = number of decks and dr = decks remaining.

The attached TCRC was calculated using the formula tc = 4 + (HL - 4*n) / dr.

Just remember the table and start your Spanish 21 HL at zero so that most of your counts are all positive numbers and use this TCRC to immediately look up the tc without any calculations for both betting and playing strategies.

I feel I have already given more details than I really wanted to do but that is the end of my Spanish 21 analysis on this website. I am not gong to list any more lest I risk being viscously attacked by the nefarious blackjack forum scoundrels who like to insult and attack my character.

Correct. Better counts have come along (eg., the secret monkey count). Katarina's work was still in progress, but cut short by her death,

When I read number 2 it made me laugh my balls off.

    21forme,

I agree with you on this one... I can't tell you how many times I've heard this same comment!

By the way, the Sp21 at the Rivers Casino near Chicago has two strange house rules:

    1. Only one hand per player.
    2. Only the player can play the MTD sidebet. In other words, you cannot allow someone else to play "your" MTD sidebet.

    Hope this helps!

DH - that is odd. Speaking of odd rules, I don't recall the specifics, but years ago, Excalibur had Sp21 with an odd (favorable) rule. Did you ever encounter it? Last time I was there, the game was gone.

No idea what that means. Humans have different skills.

    21forme,

No, I never played the Excalibur Sp21 game.

The most-favorable "odd rule" I ever played at Sp21 was the "BJ after split pays 3:2" at the long-gone Meskwaki Sp21 table in Iowa.

In Australia, two of the most favourable rules are that a player natural always wins 3:2 (there are no ties against a dealer natural) and a player can draw to 21 and win, even against a dealer natural.

The first one is a standard rule of SP21.

Yes, but in Australia the dealer does not take a hole card so a player natural is paid out immediately. It's my understanding that in the US the dealer takes a hole card, checks for a natural and if he/she has one then the hand is a tie, the round is over and the remaining players lose. This situation also removes the opportunity for a player to draw and win bonuses.

A player natural beats the dealer's everywhere I have played Spanish 21 both in Canada and the U.S. Your description of the hole card procedure is otherwise correct.
