Thread: Opinion of Blackjack Apprenticeship?

These days, before paying for services, be it fixing an appliance or learning anything, I go to the internet, do a few searches. When Zi wanted to get to count cards, I started searching, found BJ21 which, besides covering counting, had much in its archives. I found this site and lots of recommendations for great books.

Some of us search for basic public transportation, others purchase a bike or car and some prefer a chauffeured limousine. You get to your destination whichever means you choose.

I haven't read his book yet - partially because I'm still absorbing the books I already own, and because I'm cheap as a card counter and won't buy it until the price drops or I can get it used/free.

Regarding the "those who can't do, teach" point, it's my understanding that Colin tried out other business ventures because card counting can only scale up to table limits. I think he tried real estate with little success, then a financial program in the vein of Dave Ramsey's, and then BJA. And I believe he quotes his career EV to $450/hr, which turns that $600,000 into just 1,333 hours of play. If I could manage a team and stay home with my family making the same money, I would.

Now, I am put off by how most of the pros he highlights started with micro bankrolls and grew to 6 figures. In the members-only podcasts, you find out that many of them were way over-betting early on and got lucky. The math obviously shows that for each one of those guys, there's a psychiatrist's waiting room full of ones who didn't get so lucky, and aren't on a podcast talking about it. However, even the free youtube videos from BJA go into plenty of detail on RoR, and hammer home the difference between calculated EV and gambling.

Colin's a good salesman, so he knows that you have to excite people with possibilities. But I think he's also a good teacher. Anyone who learned form BJA like me and payed any attention knows exactly what to expect.

Let Colin post here to speak for himself. If he can count down a deck of cards in 20 seconds, he probably is qualified to teach.

I can count down a deck in 20 seconds. I doubt I am qualified to do anything.

Obviously, he ain’t making 450/hr now. Or he wouldn’t be teaching and running a website.

I am a firm believer if you truly understood ROR and bank roll management, you would succeed with or without a course.

Sounds like you have been networking with Midwest Player. Skelly it is just a private joke with MWP.

This definitely confirms that you are qualified to teach APs. However, you stressed too much on ROR and bank roll managements. I know little about these but I am doing fine. Of course I would like to read into them tonight.

Without at least understand the concept of ROR, anything is simply gambling.

My goodness that game must be 3% positive right off the top.

My strategy is mostly about developing a new strategy to convert a -3% game into +3%, and then I will gamble on this particular game. This approach has worked fine so far. If everything is from blackjack books, it is likely outdated. Game conditions are changing everyday.
