What on earth am I doing wrong?

Played this game for a bit and would win some lose some. Wasn't doing too bad but decided if I was going to keep playing I better do it right. I learned basic strategy, learned to count, know some of the deviations and now I can't win to save my life. I swear I'm doing it right. I've only gotten better at keeping the count as I've gone along and yet lose every time I raise my bets. We're not talking some bad luck here, it's been endless for weeks. I'm baffled. I did better when I knew nothing about the game. It has to be something I'm doing but I don't see it. I'm doing it right as far as everything I've learned after nearly a year. What am I missing?

You can be doing everything right but the rules of the game, the penetration, the number of decks and number of people at the table will all affect your results. I hear a lot of people say they are doing everything right but when they say it, they generally mean only counting cards and calculating true count but often have a poor ramp up on their bets.

You are likely to get excellent advice if you spelt out the game rules, penetration, #of decks, # of spots being played on the table and your bet spread with ramp up.

How many hours have you played and under what rules ? Long periods of losing are much more commonplace than most people realise

Wow! Endless for Weeks! Gee, what a tragedy, you MUST be doing something terribly wrong. If this is bothering you, don't be so hard on yourself, you still know nothing about the game...sorry.

Its what AP’s, particularly the young but oldies too, do. They get stressed, they get on the forum to insult, upset, or humiliate. Maybe it’s not being able to play and maybe they lost too. As I said, you would get better advice with some details. You could also be unlucky enough to fall on the very bad side of variance. If you mentioned details plus the hours you have put in, someone can even tell you how rare your losing streak is.

Hey, I said sorry, but it is not my fault you don't understand how BJ works. Weeks are absolutely nothing. The fact that you don't understand this, either in actual playing experience or by practicing for endless numbers of hours on CV, show you just don't understand blackjack and the theory behind it. The fact that you and Zeebar also see it as an insult rather than good hard advice show that you do not yet have a correct foundation to understand the game, is your fault, (and Zeebar's BTW), not mine. I have played for over 40 years and worked my way to the highest stakes, so I probably know just a tiny bit more than you do. You just cannot make the statement you did with a strong understanding of the game. Variance in BJ is a killer and unless you fully understand it and how to live with it, and plan for it, you just cannot survive.

A drill sergeant does a disservice to his soldiers if they allow them to go into battle unprepared, they are confused and shaken like you are. If you read what I said several times and look at it from that perspective maybe you can understand that I was actually trying to be helpful, but you would rather be spoon-fed by Zeebar, so okay, good for you. You just cannot play BJ at the highest levels without this type of mindset...but then Zeebar never has...so better to listen to him and his pseudo-psychological preening.

Got in a little boasting along with putting down the poster, huh. You don’t know if it’s variance, it could be game selection, rules and multiple factors. Without more details, you cannot provide a definitive answer.

    Ceo1:

I dont wish to get into a heated verbal exchange, but I wanted to express my view regarding your posts.

You come across as quite haughty. Please forgive me if I am wrong, but your tone almost seems to convey that you perhaps have an erroneous belief that in order for you to continue being successful at blackjack that you need to be less than cordial.

Consider how your posts are being received. The original poster was turned off by your sarcasm. You then insulted another (who is trying to help) with your second post, and of course that didnt go well either.

The context of this forum is not some kind of military setting. We have a blackjack player opening themselves up to us for help. Especially as a veteran player (not to mention someone who sounds to be at least 55 years old), please consider that you are gambling when you assume that your hard nosed approach is a good fit with someone. Even if the person does, at some point, receive your message as you say you intended, consider the accompanying fallout: two people likely hurt by your comments, not to mention that you are putting YOURSELF in a difficult spot. That is, perhaps something inside you knows your behavior is wrong, and you carry this negative emotion with you between postings.

You perceived the original poster to be mistaken with their approach. You responded inappropriately.

I perceived your response to be 'mistaken' in terms of its method of delivery. However, I am really hoping to not be hurtful to you (i.e., I am not responding inappropriately).

By the way, some may say that a carefully worded reply (so as to avoid offense) is weak or ineffective or preening. But I believe that if such a reply does not reach its target (in this case, you) so that the 'target' still cannot humbly sees 'the error of her/his ways' (and perhaps instead prompting the 'target' to get still more forceful and defensive, continuing to focus outward to find fault rather than take personal responsibility, and, for example, posting something like, "This Overkill person is overanalyzing me with his long-winded psychobabble"), then the target is not yet ready to hear the truth.

    What are you doing wrong?

First off, you might want to tell us more about you game...

    What System are you using?

How many decks are in play?

    What are the rules?

What are the conditions like(penetration and players) Hand Per Hour?

What is your bet spread and betting strategy like?

How many hours have you been experiencing bad luck/variance?

Are you sitting out neg. counts?

    How many deviations?

    Deck estimation?

As you can see there are many variables that can affect the results of your game, so you kinda have to be more specific when you ask the question "what am i doing wrong?"

They say its better to just play "basic strategy" than it is to count and make mistakes...

Note however; that even IF you are doing everything right and playing a perfect game bad variance "can and will" dominate your results for hours and hours on end-even possibly for weeks...Even with perfect computer play a run of bad luck can last up to as much a 10,000 hands...

Even today, i still have a hard time understanding how massive and long the swings are in this game..

You are so right....I have examined my life and determined that it is a waste of my time to share my 40 years playing experience on this forum anymore. Goodbye and I leave you to Zeebar with his advice that is so misguided and wrong i pity all the Newbies that listen to him.

I just got into counting not that long ago after I watched holy rollers. It didn’t take long for them to tell me I can’t play but in holy rollers they used disguises. Since the casino opened back up I started to play unrated and disguise myself. I made $25,532 since Covid ended. It’s easy. Just learn basic strategy and deviations and don’t bet unless the true count is +2 or better. I think they were starting to catch on to me but yesterday I dress up as a woman and it worked. In the past I just did 2x500 but now I will use different bets for different disguises. So I do anywhere from 2x500 to 2x700 or 1x 700 to 1x900. I don’t play anything negative.
