When dealers first 2 cards are Ace and 6 (soft 17),
S17 dealer must stand when his turn to play
H17 dealer must hit when his turn to play.

S17 is far more advantageous to the player than H17.

Soft 17 is when you or the dealer has an ace and ANY cards totaling 6. A,A,A,A,A,A,A is also soft 17.

If that hand happened, it's time for a bathroom break

7 aces in an SD game calls for an investigation. Not a bathroom break.

Okay, just so I understand... "hit" vs "stand" in the rules of a blackjack game, is always in regards to whether or not the dealer hits on a soft 17, not a hard 17?

Yes. Everyone seems to be sort of dancing around it. The difference is, any time the dealer has a soft 17, in S17 they stand, and in H17 they hit. S17 is a better game for the player, adding 0.22% edge in your favour.

S17 means that the dealer stands on all totals of 17, whether soft or hard.

H17 means that the dealer still stands on hard 17 but now hits soft 17.

In short, the dealer always stands on hard 17, but sometimes he also stands on soft 17 (S17) and sometimes he hits soft 17 (H17).

Now days in many casinos' the lower minimum games have the worse rules and more decks such as 8 decks with H 17 and no late surrender. The higher minimum games often have better game rules with less decks. This principle is the game within a game that casinos' play successfully. Whereby numerous players with small bankrolls who may know the basics often play the better games with little to no money management skills, subsequently often learning the hard way.

On a side note the players who play the H17 games are more likely to develop a hemorrhoid problem versus those players who don't.
