    Will Las Vegas recover?

I have hearD different opinions. Some say Maybe a year if vaccine and treatments are available. Others say, airlines and tourism will take years.

Some others say the convention business will never return to the usual, that big acts/shows may take years, this article says 2023. What do you think?

    Yes. Vegas will recover.
Remember, there have been cities that have been devastated by earthquake (San Fransisco), fire (Chicago), and by wars (cities throughout the world since cities and wars existed) and many, if not most, came back.
Hopefully, Vegas will be smart about how it recovers.
If you're really asking, "Will Vegas be the same or at least similar to what it was 6 months ago?" I'll bet that it will. All the same incentives, structures and people will be around.

I hope not. Those predatory bastards should get what they deserve.

21frogman - Unless most cities, Vegas is a one industry town. That doesn't bode well. Look at Detroit.

Devastated cities come back to live, not to gamble. When they came back, they worked out measures to mitigate future disasters. Even before pandemic, the whole idea of gambling city seemed to be outdated, given that casinos were everywhere. I think brick and motor gambling houses will eventually become obsolete. The pandemic may accelerate the process.

Maybe in 2024 or 2025. The first few patches of vaccines will be problematic if they come out at all. Look at how long it took to develop flu and AIDS vaccines.

That makes as much sense as comparing to the smallpox vaccine developed in 1796.

As an aside, did you know the word "vaccine" is derived from vacca-, Latin for cow, which is how the smallpox vaccine was derived (from cowpox)?

The 2 issues that hampered AIDS and flu vaccine do not seem to be operative in COVID-19. COVID does not mutate as fast as a flu and not likely to use a vaccine induced antibody to enter the cell, based on preliminary findings so far. There are reasons for optimisms for a COVID vaccine but will not be before the end of the year at best.

No reason it won't recover - just a matter of time until people get more comfortable with travel. Gaming really doesn't have that much to do with it. 70% of the revenues in Vegas are from non-gaming sources (entertainment, shopping, food, lodging, etc.).

There is a huge pent-up demand for travel - people want to get back to normal. Vegas will recover the same as any other travel destination.

And Vegas is damn near back to normal on holiday weekends for sure. (July 4th Holiday; this past Labor Day weekend) It's the lack of convention business and mid-week travel that is killing their recovery.
