    Shoe and Tell

I thought in line with Dave's recent photo upload and trivia, we could all do some Shoe (pun intended) and Tell! Perhaps we can share some covertly taken photos of great hands/shoes/any experience really from a casino, and provide some background story.

I'll go first, I call this one 'Subway and Single Deck'. As the name implies, I was enjoying a 1-3 spread in greens on the Sweaty Spaniard's infamous SD game. Somehow, against all odds, I managed to survive playing for 3 days in a row before I was told "No more blackjack."

oddly enough my last vegas trip i lasted the longest at el cortez
i've been kicked out in under ten minutes before. once on the first time i raised my bet on dd.
this trip i played an hour twice at double deck with no issue and my last session was about 90 minutes (i went from the el cortez to the airport so i really didn't care if they kicked me out)
They were hawking me pretty hard and i started out down almost 3,000 the first 2 shoes of dd , got about half of his back before i had to leave.

Yes, I've had similar sessions where I'd be spreading reds and last less than 30 minutes. Other occasions I'd be spreading greens and last multiple sessions over a number of times.

Anyway, it doesn't look like anyone has decided to post a photo yet, so here's my next one: Wrest Point Casino in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It is Australia's oldest casino and rumoured to have been victim to a large scale BJ team back in the 80s, costing them 7 figures. It's where many notable Australian players first started; Andrew W Scott, and Reljko Ranogajec, to name a couple. Unfortunately, the casino made the decision to switch to fully CSM after it claimed to have been "hit hard by counters" in recent times. They offered 6 deck S17 games.

You can get away with a lot of things. The table next to me had a lady playing with her dog.

Wrest Point is the oldest casino in Australia. It opened in 1973 to boost Tasmanian tourism and Blackjack was $2 a hand. The building also includes a hotel and is now heritage listed. It's actually one of my favourite casinos in Australia...quiet, low minimums and good service.

In 1982 another casino was opened in Launceston and both are owned by Federal Hotels. They changed over to CSM's last year on their Blackjack and Pontoon tables.

Dave, care to 'Shoe and Tell' any photos of your play?

It certainly was one of my favourites until they went fully CSM. Now I have no reason to visit.

I don't have any photos of cards on the felt because my local house of chance is very strict about it. I remember a royal flush at the poker table and everyone wanted to take a photo but the supervisors shut them down immediately. But I do have a few questions regarding that photo...

You're dealt 6,6 vs 10 and A,9 vs 10 so why were the two sixes split? After the split you were dealt a 7 totaling 13 vs 10 and a 4 totaling 10 vs 10. Why didn't you hit the 13? and why was the 10 doubled? I don't know the count so the latter makes sense if it was high enough. A,9 vs 10 is a stand.

For American readers we don't take a hole card and this casino uses BB+1 to resolve splits and doubles if the dealer turns over a natural (which is not known until the end of the hand and this is an expensive penalty). Also doubling is restricted to 9 - 11 and with soft doubles the Ace is counted as 1.

Hi Dave, the initial card was a 5, not a 10.

In this country I've only ever seen dealers deal left to right, not the other way around.

Many dealer's flip the hole card to the (dealer's) left before continuing to deal left to right. This leaves the up card as the second from the left.

I can assure you as a student of the game for more than 15 years, there are no conceivable situations I'd split 6s vs a 10, stand a 13, then double a 10 (unless the count dictated). It was a 5 up.

A 5 upcard makes sense. Sometimes when a dealer collects the cards and the hands need to be reconstructed to resolve a dispute they are laid back on the felt out of order.
