    Mohegan Sun Ct goes 6:5.

A pit was opened today with more to come. To add insult to injury, 6 decks games have been replaced with 8 decks and S17 has been replaced with H17. A quick glance at the house edge calculator puts the edge at this game just over 1.9%

The old rules are still in place in the high limit rooms and at least one pit on the main floor. That one will be $25 minimums. Not a problem for many of us but it could make it more difficult to find decent penetration at this venue that is famous for it's notoriously poor pen.

Holy crap! MS used to promote that they were one of the few casinos that still had 3:2 blackjack and S17. I guess they changed their minds. It is surprising that they would make such a move when competition is heating up in the northeast with MGM coming online soon. Plus, Monticello for some of us CT players is not too far away. The penetration there wasn't the greatest, but the rules were pretty good. I hope Foxwoods fills up now.

A lot has been happening in a few short days. Here is the up to the minute latest. In addition to the 10 6:5 tables already in play at least 3 more 6:5 pits are planned. The entire casino including high limits are going to 8 decks. Everything except high limit will be H17.

This casino boasts about 120 blackjack tables. Here are the new blackjack options.

    $10 minimums, 6:5, H17, 8 decks.

    $15 minimums, 3:2, H17, 8 decks.

    $25 minimums, 3:2, H17, 8 decks. (Those tables have already been re-felted).

    $50 minimums, 3:2, S17, 8 decks.

Yes, there is still the $500 minimum pit and the casino "upstairs" but they don't apply to most of us.

Maybe this is a good thing as long as it is 3:2. If they embrace the approach that Foxwoods uses cutting to one deck, then that would be an improvement. Foxwoods has always had a slight advantage vs Mohegan since they cut so deep despite 8D and H17.

Foxwoods' high limit rooms have the same good rules that MS just got rid of - 6 decks, S17 and decent pen. Good luck trying to do any serious spreading in these rooms. On the main floors 1-20 or more is very doable.

Wow this is very strange indeed to read about this. This was one of the casinos that usually offered the more favorable rules ( but cr*p pen) than other casinos and realized that your avg gambler is gonna come with $X amount of dollars, and will end up losing it anyway. You might as well let him try and have some fun with it and let him have a go with his money so he got some entertainment. Nobody likes to be made a fool of. The only thing this accomplishes is separating your ploppy gambler and his money much much quicker. Hey, while they're at it why don't they just bring in the CSM's too? This goes against all the logic Mohegan Sun has always shown. There must be new management there now. I guess with the plethora of casinos popping up they feel like they don't have a choice, I don't know? But I have a feeling this will probably blow up in their face and you will quickly see the 6:5 go away. The 8D may stay. People who live on the East Coast are some of the best blackjack ploppies in the US (verified through surveys and just watching them play), and I don't think 6:5 will fly there successfully given where it is, the competition, and the crowd they are catering to. Did I read everything will be going to 8 decks??? That's crazy, stupid, and absurd. If this is all true, you can guarantee Mohegan Sun will not be around much longer.

Your average east coast ploppy is somewhat intelligent, and knows not to play 6:5. Your average $100 east coast player knows the less decks is better for the player. With the addition of 8 decks, when you can go and play 6 decks down the street, there is no reason why anyone will want to go to Mohegan.

Also if it's gonna be 8D, are they still gonna be hand shuffling, or are they finally going to spend the extra cash on ASM's?

It's actually funny I inquired to their marketing department a few days ago about what kind of package they could put together for me. I have been going there for a while, and the last few trips there have been bad. I don't really play there to win, it's more of a spot to go hang out at when I'm in the Tri-State area with friends, and play a break even game. But the last few trips I've really been getting my ass handed to me through no fault of my own except variance. Anyway, you'd think their marketing department would aggressively be pursuing players, especially players who call up about coming in, since Resorts World opened, The Hard Rock in AC, and The Ocean Club in AC opened. But their marketing department was pretty smug about me coming, and said they'd give me 3% back, a suite, and food, and hoped I had a wonderful day, that was it. No freeplay. No bonus offers. no incentives to bring more money, nothing. I was really shocked. Why go all the way to that place when I can go to the new resorts that just opened?

I hope this does blow up in their face. The reality is that the players who favor Mohegan will likely continue to go there. It has always been busier than Foxwoods even though FW has had better games. They have had other failures. In the past they introduced a couple of Blackjack variations which didn't last long. The tables that offered the last game were always empty. It was there for such a short time that I can't remember what the game was anymore! I bet the 6:5 will disappear, but the 8D etc will likely become the norm.

BJF: Mohegan and Foxwoods have historically been tight with comps. Foxwoods has gotten better recently. Since they, the two casinos, had been for the longest time the only places in the region, they didn't have to be overly generous like AC. You might change your focus to Foxwoods instead if you wish to stay in the area. The new Resorts World doesn't compare to what is offered at the CT casinos. It is small in comparison. There are only a couple of places to eat. There's maybe one store. They have a small theater. Plus, you are out in the middle of no where. The only benefit is that the blackjack games had good rules as long as you could find a seat.

Paymypush what you say is true! I walked around MS recently disappointed. I asked a dealer why the rules were changed and he said that he just does what they tell him to do. They didn't meet with the dealers and give an explanation. The $10 6:5 games are now officially one of the worst games in Connecticut. I think the $1 game with ante plus CSM at Foxwoods tops it in that category! The penetration at the 6:5 pit was two decks cut off. I checked other pits and the best I saw was 1 1/2 cut which gave me hope! Then I saw a dealer, a new guy, cut the decks using the notch on the side of the shoe. If that is what he was taught recently, then that is what is officially expected.

I got a kick out of watching an older lady clap for joy when she got a blackjack and the dealer paid her the 6:5. lol It didn't matter to her.

I discovered that there still is an oasis of 6D for the average player. The weekend pit in the wind casino has not been converted. So, nothing has changed there. The old rules still apply at least for now.

The morons will keep coming, because, in the end, they're all morons.

The old lady is not the exception; she's the rule. Sad. In fact, pitiful. And yet again, we shouldn't blame the casinos. They're running a business. If you ran a business, upped your prices when your competition didn't, and everyone still kept coming, business as usual, why wouldn't you? The casinos aren't to blame. The mental hernias who patronize the games should be euthanized and put out of their misery.

Ok, I like to hear your perspective on what is going on with the Mohegan Sun's blackjack game? After almost two decades of just minor experiments on the small side rooms, suddenly now they make a major change out of the clear blue. The Sun and Foxwoods has a joint venture going for a new casino in the Winsor Locks area, but the MGM Grand opens August 24 in Springfield only 20 miles away.

Talk is that the tables in the Casino of the Wind will be 6:5. They haven't re felted them yet but they are not opening them either. At least not this morning which has always been the norm for a Saturday. Did you notice that the blackjack tables by the poker room have been removed? They were the Duo Blackjack and Diva tables.

The 10 6:5 tables in use now are getting a lot of play. All the players can see is the $10 minimums. The pit by the Bow and Arrow sports bar is now 6:5. That's 10 more bringing the total to 20 and counting.

Don's post sums it up perfectly. They do it because they can. And the sheep stand in line to be shorn. You can bet that all the changes will be in place before the Barrett-Jackson car auction which begins on June 20th. Massive crowds are expected.

They are going to have competition that everyone driving from Boston will pass on the way, if they were continuing on to the CT casinos.

MS is using the Atlantic City model. When PA casinos came into being, AC made their games worked. Worked well for them, didn't it? :-)

Excellent post. It’s pretty easy to understand why most people don’t care if bj is 3:2 or 6:5 when they can’t stay off the sucker side bet. The side bet on the bj games I play has about a 10% house edge. Most the time I’m the only one not playing it, but I will still have as many as 3 ploppies playing on my side bet at the same time. The locals think I hit it more than they do.

I don’t think it matters much to ploppies if they’re playing 6:5 or 3:2. If they aren't counting, they are going to lose playing either game, and I think most know this. They are just there for entertainment but they still hope they will get lucky and win in the short term.
