Casino Expansion in the U.P. Coming Soon

Island Resort and Casino located in the banana belt of the U.P. has approved a $30 million expansion which includes over 100 hotel rooms.

Has anybody played at this casino lately? I was wondering how the heat is. I haven't played there in almost 14 years since they said "no more blackjack."

This property only has 4 blackjack tables right now. They have 2 shoe and 2 DD games. The DD games had bad pen while the 6D games were very dealer dependent. Very good with some, not great with others. From a recreational standpoint, it's an interesting place. It feels like it is lost in time but not dumpy or trashy. They are way behind on technology. They rate players on pen and paper and turn it in at the end of the night. They were super generous with discretionary comps. From a possible AP point of view, I believe there is opportunity here, counting and beyond. If you get tapped, I don't believe they have the resources of similar sized casinos. Playing on different shifts should get you back in the door within the same trip.

I was there this Summer, played only about 30 minutes on the 6 deck shoe. Pen was bad, conditions were crowded, managed to full.

Sammy Boy, I think you mentioned in an email, you wanted to see the northern lights on your visit to the U.P. I don't know if you ever got to see them, but the south shore of Lake Superior between Marquette and Munising has quite a few road turn outs where you get great looking spots over the south shore of Lake Superior.

By the way, in speaking about casino expansion in the U.P., the Ojibwa casino just outside of Marquette is presently under going a $50 million expansion. However, I think they blew it when they didn't include the hotel in this phase of the expansion. Still have to drive about 15 miles back to Marquette for a place to stay.
