They are looking at the backs of the cards for any stray markings or impurities that would permit you to know a card's value before it is dealt. There are no secrets on the fronts of the cards, as they are always exposed! Of course, they look at the fronts, too, to make sure that all the cards are there.

Not every joint looks at the fronts. And thats where some of the cheating conspiracies come from.

if they don't expose the front, one deck at a time, split the deck into equal halves and give you enough time to scan from ace to king. I would promptly leave the table. Vote with your hard earned cash.

Has anyone ever seen this card showing procedure at a CSM table? I tried playing against CSMs two times in Europe, but never saw any new cards taken from sealed decks and spread on the table. It was not even clear how many decks were in the machine, and I was afraid they would get suspicious if I asked too much about number of decks and game rules, outing me as at least a sharp Basic Strategy player.

The ploppies in Europe seem to never ask for the rules. It is just a machine and they get cards and play them due to their hunches. The game of blackjack is much less known in general public than in the US. And in contrast to what is common in the US, I saw no sign on the table explaining the rules, nor any detailed explanation in a brochure (sometimes they describe the raw basics but often lack to detail them, e.g. if you may double on soft hands, surrender etc. Nor do they mention the number of decks or that a CSM is used).

You can often look at the back of the machine,There's a small computer screen . It shows how many decks are in play. You should do it as discretely as possible.

Many thanks! I indeed didn't dare to look so closely at the machines. But it is of course a joke that the casinos try to hide even the number of decks. Hey man, the number of decks is given at first in any card game description, e.g. Gin Rummy 1 deck, other types of Rummy and Canasta and Pinochle mostly 2 decks, I once read of some Canasta version called Samba with 3 decks etc. But by continuous shuffling, the game offered is actually no card game anymore, but sort of a card roulette. In a real card game, no player would tolerate the cards being shuffled after every intermediate step, or being shuffled in a secret manner (opaque housing of the CSM or a player below the table).

Try visiting Asian casinos, you'll see game after game sit in positive see true counts because they're stacking their decks with low cards. They'll never turn over their cards and reject you if you ask them to.
