Zee's results of a $1,300 win are quite a bit above expected value assuming he was only playing one hand. With only a 1 to 5 spread for a typical DD game with 70% pen his expected result would be around $900 or $45 an hour.

I don’t really calculate EV because I am a recreational counter and go to casinos to play because I enjoy it. Winning $$$ is not the only reason I go to casinos, just one of them.

In 20 -25 hour trips (3days), my biggest win has been about $3k, biggest loss is $3.3k.

Interesting...One reason I was curious is that you mention often that you have a hard time with variance. If you paid attention to how far you exceed or are below expectation that may help understanding and consequently dealing with the variance?

When I say I have a problem with variance, I mean that I don’t want to lose too much in any one session, one trip etc. Losing $2000 in a session or about $4k on a trip is about all I can handle. This, sometimes means that I walk away from a good game or cut short a trip.

Its why I call myself a recreational player. Other than being on this forum, I don’t spend any time over BJ, no practice, no counting down decks, no simulations, etc. The purpose, for me, is to enjoy my retired life and that does not go with losing much more than what I stated above. I don’t want to risk the stress and bad mood that engulfs me when I lose so I forego some opportunities.

I define a recreational player as one who has another job and is a part-time AP. The vast majority of these players use software and try to have an understanding for what they are doing/learning.

You should find another time for your style of play. Calling yourself a recreational player insults the bulk of recreational players.

21forme, your definition is kind of silly. Spending lots of time on stuff like software and time understanding stuff takes anything out of the realm of “recreation”, moves it into “hobby”.

There are a lot of recreational players who are basic strategy players, or who try to play basic but make a few mistakes. It's a first step to actual AP play.

21forme was addressing me in particular, a part time recreation player and card counter. I called myself a “recreational” player and mentioned that I dont spend much time on BZj outside the casino (no practice, software, etc.) and he stated his opinion of what he thinks is a “recreational” player.

I suppose what what you are calling recreational players are probably ploppies who range from totally clueless to those who play basic strategy.

I distinguish between recreational player and recreational AP. There's also a difference between a recreational player/AP and gambling addict.

Yup, go through the process of becoming an AP, stop feeling any emotions....the closer you are to a robot, the better.
