    Blackjack in Ireland

Ive heard, on gambling with an edge, that Ireland (Dublin) is risky to count cards. Apparently the casinos there are private clubs and its against their terms of service to count cards and if you do they can take all your money.

Is this true? Is it this extreme? Has anyone here played there, and been backed off? Are parts of Ireland safer than others?

Any tips from experience with Ireland is much appreciated. If you would rather email than post here my email is

Planning a trip to Ireland and wanted to play some BJ out there, but not if its a major risk and I'm being free rolled. Max bets probably 2 hands of €400
May the Variance be with you.

Yes, they are all technically private clubs.
The gambling law in Ireland is somewhat ambiguous.
Here is a recent article about one particular casino which refused to pay out winnings. It was upheld in court as apparently the old law basically states that a gambling establishment doesn't legally have to pay out winnings.

Very nice business behaviour. So why should anyone play there if winnings are not paid but losses kept?

Same thing with London, there is a chance of confiscation in the terms.

As Munchkin says, casinos do cheat today but it’s not by dealing seconds or adding 4s to the shoe. These days they just steal your money.

I played in Dublin a few months ago. I had to sign up for a membership to get started. That included ID and acknowledging club rules. One question asked in the application survey is if you have previously "been asked to not play there for any reasons". I paraphrased that, I need to go back and find the terms of the agreement. I would think your first back off might end reasonably, but if you go back again you are risking to forfeit your winnings.

Based on what I saw there were some positive factors that could give you cover, but also some negative factors that can expose you or reduce your edge. 2 hands of €400 would likely draw scrutiny. A betting pattern that makes it look like you are wild gambler would be important. There were lots of crazy characters in there, you just want to look like one of them vs. doing a textbook grind session.

Happy to share more specifics by PM.
