Pit Boss says I can only lose $5,000

My friend was playing recently, he plays unrated and has a huge chip inventory (20k+) he has played this store a few times now, always unrated, and has ran very well, being up over 10k total in a few nights. He goes up to 2x500.

His last play night, he starts losing. After hes only down 2k or so, the pb informs him that once he reaches -5k, he cannot play anymore unless he uses a players card due to their procedure. My friend gets down 5k, pb tells him no more play until you get a players card, my friend refuses and has to walk away from a RC of +22.

This particular store is VERY tolerant. I know people that have been playing rated there for years, playing black chips.

I'm very confused as to this procedure. I've never heard of it, and it makes no sense. Unrated players can only lose 5k? He used only chips to buy in, no cash. I am very perplexed. Thoughts?
May the Variance be with you.

Casino policy knowing they have to track CTR? Or they are on to him and it’s a cute way to lock in losses vs letting him earn it back?

There's no CTR for chips until it's turned into cash.

Unfortunately, he has no recourse, other than taking a few more chips out of his pocket and risking the consequences if/when noticed. Casinos have the right to set policy, as stupid as it may be at times.

Playing rated for years black chip is one thing...winning 20K unrated in a few sessions is totally different.
Maybe they were tolerant with other players when using players card, but like you said not for your friend that has no card.
And this isn't new...they just want to ID you. it's basically the flip side of trying to ID you at the cage. Some casinos will put a limit on what they will allow you to win/lose at the table...then demand ID or a card instead of at the cage. Basically they are aware he won and has 20K in a few sessions of their chips and he never cashed out... and they do not like that.

Seems too easy. Someone who wins big at a table, they track to see where he goes when he leaves table. If he heads for the parking lot and not the cashier, it’s just a matter of time. The next few sessions will be interesting. Will they allow him to play, will they back him off, etc.

A major reason the casino is perturbed is because they can't track the chips, where they came from. Kind of the same thinking as the cage when the cashier won't cash some large denomination chip that clearly belongs to them because "we don't have it on your card." We always have a table chip inventory. Like we may have 10k at a place but know that once we add 4k to the table it will raise some red flags so the table chip BR is 4k. Something to think about.

So you think if he was buying in for cash the entire time that he would have been able to keep playing? (Up to 10k without ID)
