Thread: Sure Glad I'm Not on a Blackjack Trip This Weekend

Occasionally I've been checking out the web cam in the link of the OP. Every time I look the cars in the parking look are either SUV or pickups. I assume they are all four wheel drive. I guess I'm the only one with a regular car without snow tires.

Anyway, my wife went shopping the other day. As usual she couldn't make it up the driveway. After the third try, and getting the driveway all slick with her tire spinning, I yelled out the window to leave it. I had to get all dressed up and drive it up for her. I will admit both the road and driveway were very slippery especially after all the spinning she did. I did shovel a little before I attempted the run, but I made it on first attempt. It really pisses her off when I can drive it up on the first try and she can't.

Anyway, my snow tires should arrive in a couple of days. Hope that will make a difference.

So why do you still live there?

That’s what I don’t really get! Maybe his wife has a very good job. I can’t see why people who don’t have to live in places like upper Michigan or anywhere that cold unless they have to work there. However, some folks can never leave anything they own and maybe that’s it.

But................all he does is complain about it and in the past he said his kids no longer live around there because there are no jobs. The answer seems to be he likes to complain and the attention he gets as a result.

Freightman nailed it. It is home. I know the area well. In fact, I know the entire U.P. quite well. I have my trusted doctor who I like along with my dentist, and eye doctor here. I still have family in the area. I'm right in the middle for my kids to visit and they are all within a days drive. Hell, if I was some place like St George, Utah, I would be too far away for them to ever visit.

I really don't mind the cold. Yesterday, I walked to the eye doctor and back with only a golf jacket on. It was about a .7 mile hike one way. I usually have the wife drive me one way, but figured she would get stuck in the driveway again. I suppose I could walk to the dentist if I had to, but it would be a farther hike.

Anyway, today got 4 top of the line brand new snow tires for my car. Went up the driveway without a single wheel spin, but I must admit the fresh snow covered up the icy spots. So far haven't shoveled. My snow plower isn't suppose to start for another week, but maybe this weekend will do some shoveling. So far the wife shoveled the steps about 4 times. She actually shoveled twice today. I still think the snow will melt. Even in the U.P. Nov 2nd is early for snow to come and stay, but no sign of melting yet.

Last year was a pretty bad winter, but this winter is already ahead of last winter in total snowfall.

    So, who cuts the grass?

When we bought our first house, my parents told they would but a lawnmower for our house warming. I innocently asked my wife if she preferred gas or electric.

I pretty much cut the grass. Really didn't have to cut it that many times this year. Sometimes the wife helps.

Anyway, I bought a new and bigger cordless electric lawn mower this year. I now have two. A Neuton and an Ego.

    Midwest Player,

I don't know how you deal with it. We got hit with 6 inches of snow today and I'm already sick of winter, before the 15th of November!

Cons for snow: it causes slippery driving conditions, adding considerable time to commutes. It causes slippery footing, leading to more falls. Snow gets tracked from boots and shoes into the house, making a mess. After a couple days, snow becomes filled with dirt and mud, so it's not even good to look at.

I will admit this has been a very early start to winter this year even by U.P. standards. Nov 15th is usually when snow comes and stays for the winter and up until a couple of days ago I thought it might melt. However, it has snowed some for the last 12 days in a row and we now have over two feet for the winter. It is suppose to get above average at the at the end of the week, but I think we have just too much snow for it all to melt. It is still possible, but doubt it.

My snow plower wasn't suppose to start until Nov 15th, but he has already came twice this year. By the way, the best way to cut down on commute time to work, is to live close enough to work so you can walk. For most of my working life it took me 12 minutes to walk to work. Never had to worry about the snow.

The eastern U.P. near Munising got hit really hard. Just streams of lake effect snow off the big lake. This is where the Kewadin casino in Christmas MI is located.

the UP. The weather up there can be crazy. I remember heading down to Leelanau Sands one time in December. I went down the Mackinaw Bridge in some of the worst weather I had ever seen. Cars off the road everywhere. I have no idea how I made to Traverse as I could barely tell if I was on the road. All that way to get barred in one shoe the next morning (first time I ever got the Trespass Act). Luckily it was the hottest shoe of all time (no kidding) and it made up the for 150 hours I pounded that place and lost a few months before.

    Or work from home!

In Denver we had a lot of snow last week, unusually early from what people tell me.

I worked from home 3 days that week, definitely didn't want to deal with snow or ice.
