Planning a Blackjack Trip? This is the Time of Year When Winter Can Strike at Anytime

Might be a good thing to put a shovel in the car. Notice Marquette MI in the U.P. is third on the list with a Sept 13th first snowfall.

Many other locations in MI has seen accumulating snow in Sept, and I can remember seeing snow in Sept.

I think on every blackjack trip I made last year in Oct, I ran into snow on at least one leg of the journey. I gave up blackjack for the year after the middle of Nov last year as winter had already set in.

MWP, give yourself a break and take a few plane trips between September and April, get away from the cold and snow. How far are you from a major airport? Flights to LasVegas are cheap. Suggest using Kayak.com to search.

Guess I should follow my own advice. Recently headed out on a week long blackjack trip. I knew winter storm Aubrey was going to hit the plains and then move east, but lows were predicted to be only in the low 30's so didn't pack a shovel or any winter stuff. I was hoping the weather forecast would be correct this time. But first let's get to the blackjack trip.

Here are the highlights of my trip.

    1) I'm driving south into WI on a great fall day. As I'm approaching Eagle River WI in the distance I see something on the ground next to a mailbox. My first thought was someone put up a scarecrow for Halloween next to the mailbox and it fell over. However, when I got closer I saw it was a person laying on the ground. My next thought was he was probably resting or sleeping, but that didn't make much sense. I probably drove a couple 100 yards past him and decided to turn around and see if he was alright. Just as I was about to turn around somebody else did the same thing just a few seconds before me. She got there first and I just went past and came back on the other side of the road and watched. Yeah it was a person alright and he was hurt. I just stayed in the car and watched. She got him to sit up and he had to hop on one leg to the car. I don't know any details if this person was his wife or just a stranger. Soon another car stops by, but soon left, Then the police stop. Don't know if they were called or just happen to be driving by, but everything seemed to be under control so I continued on my way. I'm just guessing, but maybe he was running and pulled a ligament or sprained an ankle. Wish I knew what happened.

    2) Won on every day of the 5 day trip. This is quite unusual as I almost always have at least one losing day. However the bad news is the wins were rather on the small side.

    3) Got three blackjacks in a row, but this has happened several times before, but this one seemed special. My record is 4 blackjacks in a row which has happened only once before.

    4) Did well on all my free play. Overall doubled the face value of my free play on video poker.

    5) Was so damn tired when I got to my final destination that I ate, picked up my luggage, and then went to bed without playing BJ at all. A couple hours later got up late at night and played a couple of hours of blackjack. Just a small BJ win.

    6) Overall was very disappointed with the few blackjack hours got in on this trip. Over the entire 5 day trip got only 19 hours of blackjack play. I could of played a final session at my main destination, but an incident happened and I thought it was better not to play anymore.

    7) Trip was good enough to set a new blackjack high for the year, but surely nothing to brag about.

    8) Coming back on the plane looked out the window and as far as I could see the plains were covered with snow. Winter storm Aubrey just dumped over 2 feet of snow on the plains and was moving East.

    9) No snow when landed, but this seemed like Deja vu all over again as in April 2018 got stranded for 3 days in a snowstorm that dumped 30 inches of snow. As I was driving to my final casino destination to spent the night I remember back in 2018 going around this same curve when the storm hit. This time no snow yet, but the wind picked up as I was going around this curve and leaves were blowing all over the place. Yeah the storm was coming.

    10) As soon as I got to my final casino destination, I gassed up the car. I usually do this in the morning, but didn't know what kind of storm was going to hit. I hadn't eaten all day long so after got checked into hotel, then got something to eat. I was then again so damn tired all I wanted to do was go to bed, but I knew if I went to bed I would be too tired to get up to play. I didn't want to stiff this casino as I wanted the comps to continue. I decided I had to play some even if it was for only an hour. I also didn't want to risk putting my winning trip at risk after an exhausting week so I decided I would only risk a couple hundred dollars. I played so damn tired I couldn't think straight, but luck was on my side. At the half hour mark, I was up $100 and wanted to quit, but forced myself to play another half hour. At the hour mark, I was up a little over $200 and called it quits. If I would have spread like I normally do, I would have probably won twice as much. Then I remembered I forgot about my free play. It was only a small amount and I was about to say piss on it and go to bed, but decided to play it and did well on it. I had over a 200 mile trip ahead of me for the next day and needed sleep bad.

    11) Stayed up much later than planned in my hotel room watching the weather on tv and reconciling my wins for the trip. Actually got going about a half hour later than planned and gave the car a quick look over before heading home in the morning. I noticed my front tire was almost bald. If I would run into any kind of snow this car would be worthless. I got in the car and looked at the temp display. It said 40 degrees outside. I drove about 40 miles North and looked again at the temp display and it was down to 35 degrees. About another 10 miles up the road, it started snowing. Nothing real hard, but snow in the air. A few more miles up the road, the temp display says 33 degrees. Then it started snowing and blowing real hard as I crossed the WI border into God's country often known as the U.P. of MI. The temp display was now down to 32 degrees and snow was starting to show up on the grassy areas. I kind of like driving in this kind of weather as long as there is no accumulation on the roads. It is kind of exciting. However, I would soon be approaching the lake effect snow areas and didn't know what to expect. A few more miles up the road, I looked at the temp display again and it was up to 34 degrees. I knew I was safe then as the big lake has a warming effect. This time of year areas around northern WI often get snow while areas closer to the big lake get none. In fact, the temp display kept rising all the rest of the way home. It got back up to 36 degrees. Anyway, every blackjack trip I made in Oct last year, I ran into snow on at least one leg of the trip and this year is starting out the same.

Regarding "Low[temperature]s in the low 30s":
To my knowledge, 32 degrees Fahrenheit is equal to 0 degrees Celsius, where water freezes - the classic winter temperature, so you should expect "winter stuff" :-)

Good report MWP. Don’t know why you don’t become a snowbird, leave for the winter. I live in Missouri and my neighbor is leaving, as usual, for Florida for the winter.

You said in the other thread (Poll...) you have no time to read the forum because all you do is play BJ. I don't get it.
