    Vegas: Downtown or the Strip

What is everyone's preference when going to Vegas? Do you like to stay downtown or on the strip? I never stayed or played Downtown and my next trip would probably be to Downtown. It looks like rooms are much cheaper downtown. Any recommendations on where to stay?

The best hotel downtown by far is the Golden Nugget, which is also the most expensive downtown. Everything else is kinda junky, but as long as under the Fremont street Experience - you’re safe.

In your free time, sit on the mall and people watch - it’s hilarious. I drive, so parking is a rip off on the strip, but since you’ll walk or take the bus, it will be far more economical. If I planned to play on the strip, or close to the strip, I found reasonable and very acceptable accommodation at Tuscany. They have a casino attached which is a low end sweatbox - what I commonly refer to as a shit hole - they don’t like action.

If I came to LV for the first time, I would be a red chipper and beginner, so I would like to start playing downtown first, which doesn't necessarily mean staying there. To me a nice hotel with pool for relaxing would be important, and of course also visiting the strip and playing at least a few hands there. There are certainly too high table limits for my taste at some venues (probably Bellagio, Caesar's Palace, Wynn) but I saw some examples like Stratosphere, TI and maybe Encore seeming to offer lower limits 5/10/15 min tables. A necessary precondition is no CSM and no 6:5 in any case. Caesar's Palace, Tropicana and Excalibur don't help if they only offer CSM or 8 deck 6:5 for normal lethal people. Maybe there are some decent games also some North of Strip.

Some strip properties offer excellent games for lower limits if you play super early in the AM. You just have to scout.

Favorite Vegas property is the Wynn. We generally stay there (comped) or on a Caesars property (comped) and play unrated elsewhere.

Could you mention some of those properties?

You said you played strip games in the AM. Get up two hours earlier, and go to the best game there. It will be $50 vs $100. Once I got it for $25.

Seriously, all of the games are lower minimum in the very early AM. Start at TI and work your way down, or vice versa.

Success varies. There's the opera song place that seems to prefer to have empty tables rather than lower their mins on request.

On my only Vegas trip back in 2009, I went into the Bellagio looking for a low 2 deck min game. It was morning, but not real early in the morning. I found a 2 deck $100 min table. I asked if he would make it a $25 min table since no one was playing. Heck, I might of even asked for $10 min, but they would have none of that. Anyway, he did honor my request to make it a $25 table.

About 20 minutes later he puts the $100 min sign back on the table, but says I'm grandfathered in at $25 min. About 15 minutes later some regular joins the table playing $2,000 a hand. I really felt out of place. I actually did this two days in a roll and when I left I thanked the pit guy for doing it for me.

I also used to do that at Bellagio. Hasn't worked the last several years.

I live in the EST zone. When I'm in LV, I act as though I am still in that time zone. While I haven't been able to get a 2 deck table at Bellagio with $25 min at 4 AM, I am able to get lower limit tables with 0 other players at other casinos.

I've gotten it at $25 once. You can always get it at 50 if you're early enough though.
