Newby here. Hi Lo system and when to bet high

I have been practicing the hi lo method for half the year. I have a 6 deck shoe and practice about every day. I Know there is a point where you should be able to raise your bets. But I have yet to find it. Most of the time the count never seems to get high enough to raise bets. I have used it some what successfully for a 16 against a dealers 10 but not so much for when the count goes high. any suggestions.

It might be time to delete my account.

Op: if you learned from a book, you should read it again. If you didn't learn from Stanford Wong, then go do so. You're pretty lost.

Are you sure you're counting properly?

If you're never seeing a +2 or +3 with HiLo, you're either experiencing a lot of terrible luck at home, or might be doing something wrong.

    What counts are you seeing?

I guess you are dealing to yourself slowly, and that is why it seems to take forever to get to a high count. What I recommend is that you rig the shoe with a +10 slug of low cards right off the bat. It is more important to practice counts above +1 because that is when you have more money out.

As for when to bet high, you should calculate your advantage per true count, and use that to determine your bet. I recommend a formula of bankroll * advantage * .3. So if you have a $10,000 bankroll, and a 1% advantage, you would bet $30.

In order to calculate your advantage at a given true count, I recommend the use of a blackjack simulator such as CVCX.

I Have had true counts of + 6 or 7 with about 1.5 decks left. I try to simulate the casino play buy using the spacer card in which there is about a deck not being used. I will check out Stanford Wong.
I live in Wisconsin and most of my play is Ho Chunk in the Wisconsin dell area. I have been to vegas and played on a cruise ship (Continuous shufflers) and had fairly good success.

"Professional Blackjack" (1994 edition). Uses Hi-Lo count and explains win rate and standard deviation particularly for 6 decks as a benchmark right in the beginning, pp. 18-20. Btw. it is normal that six-deckers don't show high counts everytime. A rule of thumb is about one in four or maybe five shoes gets "hot". Dealing with physical material is good (I do it myself) but for gaining speed the Casino Verite software is recommended.

Another rule of thumb is that your advantage increases by half a percent when your TC increases by one. To equalize the house edge of about 1/2 percent, you thus need a TC of +1. Then you are even with the house. At a TC of +2, you have about 1/2 percent advantage. So you can start raising your bets at a TC of +1 or higher. The books give examples for bet ramps, and CVCX can compute optimal bet ramps for different rules and counting systems.

This is one of the biggest problems of this (and all) message boards. The people responding think they're helping but they're not. From the OP:

He can't put together a coherent sentence about what he's doing! Half percentage advantages and bankroll formulas? Stop. It's ridiculous.

Better yet, quit before it escalates to an addiction.

This forum is attracting members from BJA (where newbies reside) who would rather not pay the cost of BJA.
