    Best way to count?

New counter here. During my training, I have gotten used to counting each individual card as it comes out of the shoe. However, some people say to wait until the cards are dealt so you can just cancel. Which do you recommend? I've heard it's less mental fatigue if you use cancellation.

Cancel. It’s faster and yes less mental fatigue. Eventually seeing the cards becomes natural and you can count an entire table in just a couple seconds.

I don't even look at the cards when they first come out of the shoe. I intentionally look away or act uninterested when all hands are being dealt. Then when the play starts at first base I briefly scan the table and run through all the pairs using the cancel method.
I would of never acquired this skill without spending many hours with Casino Verite. That's why I think training software is a must. The only problem with the software is that it's easy to get good at counting cards that are dealt out at a blazing fast consistent rhythm, but live play has some quirks you'll have to adjust for. At first I would get jammed up when dealers would add up peoples hands and the totals closely resembled my running count. This leak was easily fixed after a dozen or so hours of live experience.

Yes, I use Casino Verite and it is a godsend. Can count through shoes five times as fast than on my kitchen counter. I've yet to count in casino so I don't doubt their will be new challenges with live play. I'm building a bankroll right now so my main focus now is practicing 3-4 hours everyday and to just get mindlessly good so I can minimize mistakes at the casino.

But yeah, I'm going to start cancelling when I practice on Verite.

What I would do is start another thread on the topic.

My "Best way to count" suggestion: use Arabic numerals. Trying to count using Roman numerals is II difficult, and you will ofX IVget the count! Just my II/C ¢ ;-)

Depends on the count you use. If you use halves canceling is a lot harder to do, but even with halves I think canceling is the way to go. Just can't cancel as much. Freightman, how do you count with halves.

Count in pairs. Try to count down a deck in single cards and in pairs and measure the time for comparison. Being a beginner counter too, I was quite despaired about my slow counting but my times dropped from 40 to 50 seconds to 25 seconds, sometimes only 16 seconds, when I switched to pairs. Still have to work on time and accuracy but in any case it is much faster and less error-prone. Especially when counting a table you can ignore the high-low combinations and not even try to count them (in CV as well as in a casino). Most of the times, I even initially omit the dealer upcard and count it later together with the hole card when it is flipped over at the end of the round, just for having even more pairs and cancellations. For shoe games, this makes little difference in accuracy as long as the count is negative. When the count justifies to raise the bet, I count the dealer upcard sooner, for the sake of insurance and playing accuracy (deviations from basic strategy).

    Cancel, 2 to 3 at a time, sometimes 4.

Cancelling halves is easy, automatic and instantaneous. Just have to get used to it.
