    The Mississippi Grind

So, I managed to get a hold of "Mississippi Grind" last week, and boy oh boy is this movie little more than a tribute to the fine art of the degenerate gambler. I always enjoy watching gambling themed movies. What are some other gambling themed movies we could watch, what is your favorite and why?

The Gambler (1974) with James Caan - an outstanding depiction of the misery that comes with compulsive gambling.

Rounders & the one about the MIT team, although it's fallacious.

Holy Rollers is good...........although I wish they had fleshed out the part about booting the "non-Christian" player when they were in a losing spell............and also about one of the principals losing his counting talent and not testing out to play again.

'Rounders' is excellent. In the old days, 'The Hustler' was good, with Paul Newman..........if you watch it together with the sequel, with Tom Cruise, 'The Color of Money', that makes for a pretty good movie evening!

There was way more to this story than what the doc talked about.

I like "Lucky You", with Eric Bana, Robert Duvall and Drew Barrymore (2007). I thought the poker scenes were the most realistic of the poker movies, particularly the outtakes. They had real poker players doing many of them.

"Holy Rollers" is utter crap. That aside ...

The best movie ever RE: a pathological gambler

starred the immortal Philip Seymour Hoffman --

who received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal.

A true story about how Caesars A. C.

aided and abetted in the biggest bank

    swindle in Canadian history.

See: the ultra low-budget ... "Owning Mahowny"

Mahoney embezzled millions of dollars from his employer - a Canadian Bank - and blew it in Atlantic City. I think it was CIBC - they sued and received an undisclosed settlement. Ceasars knew Mahoney was a 20k a year loan officer without the resources to gamble the sums that he dud, and drive a broken down car.

Love that classic line when confronted by the police "I don't have a gambling problem, I have a financial problem".

Gives an excellent synopsis on a huge embezzlement

Yes this is really a grade A film. Owning Mahowny is the top of list

    Other films I've seen:
21: fun film, who cares if it's not 100% realistic. Turned me on to counting. And after I had been counting, I watched again, and got a different perspective of enjoyment

Hard 8: eh, was fine, but not that memorable to me. Not really gambling movie either, just had people who happened to be casino hustlers

The Gambler (w/ Marky Mark): Utter piece of shit, do not watch

    Casino: mafia movies are awesome!

Casino Royale: this is the one where James Bond plays poker? Stupid and boring

The Croupier: it was good. British film if you're into that

Oceans movies (newer ones from 2000ish): I think the first was a nice heist movie, and they went downhill from there
