How about just explaining to the old guy that he has 20? Is this behavior proliferating with casinos telling employees to "go by the book" to avoid spurious complaints?
It's very possible that the elderly gentleman thought that you had to get OVER (It's possible that he didn't know exactly how BJ is played)to win which is why he chose the worst decision ever in BJ. Asking for another card after having the best amount besides a 21? No, just no. Asking for an extra card after having a 20 is just plain begging to lose.
