    Thumbs up Encore Boston

The Grand Opening was yesterday, and as expected the casino was very crowded. Parking is free (at least for now). -------------------Sunday night, the numerous BJ tables had a $50 minimum ($5000 max), 8 deck, all were ASM, late surrender. Some tables were BJ pays 3:2, other tables were 6:5. Penetration was not great, although it was dealer dependent. A player is only allowed to play one spot. I’m not sure what all of the other rules were, and I don’t think the dealers knew either. Splits seemed to be unlimited. One player had the luxury of doubling down on a three card 11 (he got away with this on two different hands). It’s a nice rule in Spanish 21, but I’ve never seen it in BJ. -----------------------------The good news is that they didn’t seem to care how much you bet. Never heard “checks plays”, “purple action”, etc. Back-counting was easy to do. Easy to blend in with the crowd (lots of people standing around the gaming tables). ----------------------------The Cashier Cage had a really long line. The Cage in the Poker Room was a little bit better. I probably won’t go back Encore.

If all were ASM, how is penetration even a thing?

ASM is very different from CSM. Not too long ago I sat down at a CSM table and didn't even think of looking at the shuffler. I thought it was a hand held single deck game and actually played three hands before I realized it was a CSM.

You thought the dealer's hand was black and the size of a small vacuum cleaner?

I sure didn't expect a CSM in single deck heaven. I remember walking in and siting down at the very first table. There were only two tables open, and nobody else was playing. I remember glancing at the discard tray and it was a small single deck tray. I bought in for a couple hundred and never checked the dealers hands or saw the shuffler as I was sitting at a slight angle to it. The dealer never put the cards back in the shuffler. I only noticed the shuffler when I felt something was wrong when no face cards came out after the third round. Very unusual for single deck. Then, I noticed the beast of a shuffler and said what the hell is that. I was told I was playing a 6 deck game with a csm. In the past they never had a 6 deck csm game. I think I lost the first three hands I played on that game.

Anyway, I was told the other table was 3:2 single deck and moved there. I played for about a half an hour and walked with a small win. It is a shame CBJN no longer lists 6:5 games or games with csm's. If they did, things like this would be less likely to happen.

I was surprised to read the parking was free. I had read that they were charging $22 for 6 hours and $42 for 24 hours in their 3000 car garage. I'm waiting for the opening hulabaloo to die down and then take a trip up there to see it for myself. I don't know if the parking fee is going to work against them... every other casino I frequent in CT, MA, and RI is free parking. The others are all very accessable off major highways. Boston traffic may make it difficult to get to this place. Is it worth the hassle? They have off-site parking with shuttle buses and shuttles running from some subway stops in the area. I have a feeling that it's going to be one visit for me just to check it out and then a "been there, done that" non-return. Especially if the BJ rules suck.

Report on another site said there were more table games employees than customers playing on the second day.

Blackjack on Encore Boston Harbor's main floor is 8 deck, H17, late surrender and no re-split aces. I counted 22 6:5 tables and 17 3:2 tables. Minimums were $25 and $50 across the board. The 6:5 tables are not necessarily lower minimums. Table max was $5,000. All are dealt from ASMs. Penetration is 1.5/8 guided by a slot on the side of the shoe. The cards are placed in the shoe and the cut card is dropped down.

This is a 2 level casino and the high limit room is on the second level. It has 12 blackjack tables that are 6 deck S17 with the same other rules as the tables downstairs. These are also dealt from ASMs. There is no hand shuffled blackjack in this casino however there are some private gaming areas of which I have no knowledge. The penetration was a dismal 1.5/6 in the very limited time that I observed. Anyone wanting S17 will be playing $100 a hand minimum.

Side bets at all tables are Super 4 and Match the Dealer.

The staff is surprisingly clueless. Floors could not answer basic questions about the games they were supposed to be supervising. Security is everywhere. They are in every hallway, by every elevator, in the garage and outside. There is a bright red jacket in every nook and cranny in the building.

Dealer mistakes were rampant. I watched a dealer repeatedly pay a $25 blackjack with two green chips. A player playing Match the Dealer had 2 seven of spades and was paid 20-1 by the dealer and okayed by the floor. The dealer said "two suited" and the floor said to send it. The dealer was showing a 6.

Parking is not free. The cost for self park is $22 for 6 hours and $42 for 24 hours. Valet is $29 for the first 6 hours and $49 for 24 hours. There was no charge yesterday or today but the fees will return. Shuttles to some off site parking lots are $7 per person each way as is the water taxi. The employees also must pay for parking.

The buffet is $39.99 plus tax. Patrons must be 21 to partake and men may not wear sleeveless shirts. This casino is in the city of Everett, not in Boston. Wife beater shirts may have been invented there.
