Basic strategy beyond your initial two cards?

    Hello all,

I have a sort of basic question about basic strategy (pardon the pun). Does this approach extend beyond a player's initial two cards?

E.g. BS states that if your first two cards total 13 or higher and the dealer is showing a 6 or lower, then stand. You draw a 3, 4, 4, 2 against a dealer 6.

    Now you have a 13 against the dealer's 6.

Do you at this point still follow basic strategy and stand, even though your are well beyond your initial two cards?

    Just wondering. Thanks.

Of course there is a basic strategy beyond your initial 2 cards, just as they’re deviations to that depending on the count. Example, basic says to pass 12 v dealer 4. A couple of weeks back, I had that hand. I hit for a 3rd card reaching 14, and then hit again for a 4 card 21. The obvious conclusion you can reach is that the deck was weak at the time.

Further, let’s say you have a 2 card 16 off the top v 10 (true 0). In absence of surrender, Basic says to hit. At higher true counts, index says to stand. Now, a 3 card 16 v dealer 10, correct strategy is to pass a 3 card 16 EXCEPT when one of the cards is a 6. Care to reason why?

Other very good people have simmed this for you and have devised correct strategies. Learn your basic and then learn your indices.

Yes, you still follow basic strategy. The only difference comes with a holding like A52 v 6, where you would normally double A7, but here you cannot, so you stand. This is usually referred to one blackjack charts as double / stand. Likewise you will have charts that indicate you should surrender / hit for say 16 v T, because in the case of a holding like T33 the surrender option will not be available.
