What is doubling

On my strategy chart it mentions to double on certain numbers. Example: a,3 double on 5,6 otherwise hit.
What happens when you double? You double the bet and you are given another card? And what do you do then? Determine what to do from the chart based on this new number? Thanks again.

You double your bet and you're given just one more card. You can't take another card after that.
Some places allow "double for less", so if your bet it $100 you don't have to put down another $100 - you put any additional amount up to $100.
In regular BJ you can only double down to get your third card. In Spanish 21 I think you can double-down any time.

Don't feel obligated to double everytime the chart says. If you notice a ton of face cards have come out or Aces when you have a ten, I wouldn't double against a dealer face card or sometimes even 9 or 8. With any weaker hands always follow the basic strategy. Particularly when the dealer shows a 4,5,6 and to a lesser extent 2 or 3, doubling is like the casino offerring you free money. You get to put out another bet when the dealer is weak. Now occassionally you will be unlucky and the dealer will have a 5 under that six, but more times than not it will be a 10, 9, 8 or 7 and the dealer will bust or you will make a better hand.

You honestly don't know what doubling means? Do your self a favor and do not listen to the above post.
