    Caveat:

They handle whale action, but in Louisiana / Mississippi (any peripatetic pro can attest)
there is actual danger in attempting to win any amount of money using brainpower!

That article is accurate as to what is currently happening in the State of LA. Someone is going to have to fight the casinos in court to get the law enforced.

I play the gulf coast casinos regularly and haven't had trouble in the last 10 years. I play moderate stakes, quick sessions, and play casinos in a rotation so they forget my face before I return. I am not making a living playing blackjack, but I do supplement my income with winnings.

I have other skills besides card counting. Blackjack can be beaten without counting cards at all, and if you know what I'm talking about, you know what I mean. Those opportunities are rare but very profitable when you find them.

I also play poker and other AP opportunities. Mississippi has recently opened sports books and I am doing well with that. You simply cannot be a one trick pony these days if you want to be an AP.

The law is quite literally moot in this matter. I shan't digress into the standard
restrictions that are applied to Card Counter to make the game non-exploitable
for them while not I even know pros who have been tossed from casinos on bogus
    charges.

This year, a friend [who I know is a bit of a clean_freak] was escorted off- property
in Maryland when the suits created a bogus event. Supposedly (anonymous patrons)
had verbally complained (to an anonymous pit boss), that he "Smelled badly."
This conservatively attired bone-thin young civil servant was literally "Shown the door."
hilariously escorted by the standard "Goon Squad."

This had occurred far away from any blackjack pits ~ but his face, was known; and he is
just a recreational [low-rolling] card-counter, who 'shoots' a lot of 'dice.'

Tarzan / I were laughing a bit too much the other day while reminiscing.

WE watched him playing BJ about 7 or 8 years ago,[armed with nothing
but basic Hi-Lo, Ill-16.] We had so much fun. Afterwards, we dined on the
casino's dime; but the good stuff was yet to come. We objectively dissected the
young man's play. Both Tarzan and I concluded how far off in bet-sizing, for his
skinny bankroll, and some playing decisions were 'spotty'. We had only 'clocked'
    one full shoe.

The most common errors were bet-sizing and failure to be risk-averse
of course. We found playing errors for both slightly negative True Counts
    and,
(far more crucial), at a robust True Count that was juicy for about
    eight (8) rounds.

I used to do this for players on this site, but I am now retired from traveling.

ZMF, would it not be fair to say that for the first 25 years that you started gambling, that you were nothing more than any other ordinary unsuccessful gambler?

Counting on my fingers ~ I discover that I was a serious
ploppy for as many years as I was a Professional Player.

Combining them exceeds a half-century of days wasted.

ZMF, you show a lot of modesty. Not because you think you wasted a half a century, but because of the intelligence you possess, where you could have chosen many professions. You were a professional in the medical field and later became a gaming Pro and teacher, not too shabby to say the least. I hope you enjoy the rest of your retirement.
