We have to drive NYC to Chicago this summer and would like to make a two-week vacation out of it. Thinking of continuing on to the Black Hills but that doubles the distance so something less ambitious might be smarter.
Hoping people can offer suggestions in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois or wherever for two parents w/ girls 12 and 14. We like cities as well as swimming and outdoors stuff, though not camping or hunting types. Also thought about looping back through Canada to Niagara and Montreal/Quebec area. Could make the trip in July or August so if there's something in particular to see or avoid, we could plan around it. Shareit https://get-vidmateapk.com

I'm assuming you are talking about the summer of 2020 as this summer is just about over. At least in the U.P. it is, as I have already turned the heat back on. A few days ago we had lows in the upper forties.

Anyway, as far as the U.P. goes, you won't find any large cities. A better word might be some large towns to visit although they are technically cities. The population of the entire U.P. is less than 312,000, and that is about 5 times more than the population of Greenland.

Now here is a suggestion for you. The U.P. is a great place to visit in the summer time. It is about a days drive north from Chicago. In the western U.P. there are the Porcupine Mountains and Lake of the Clouds. In the far northern U.P. you can find Copper Harbor and Brockway Mountain Drive. In the eastern U.P. around Munising are the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. If you keep going east you then have Tahquamenon Falls and eventually Sault St Marie and the Soo Locks. Might want to go down and see the big Mac Bridge and take a trip to Mackinaw Island. You could then cross over into Canada at the Soo and continue your journey east thru Canada.

I'm originally from MI. I drove up to Houghton many years ago. Very nice drive and experience. I remember driving through a town called Christmas town where I think they actually celebrated Christmas 24/7. I will never forget the pictures showing plowed snow up to the top of telephone poles.

Sounds like a great place to live, especially a senior citizen.

The lower portion of the U.P. doesn't get the lake effect snow as much the northern portion does.

I don't know if you were aware that Christmas has a casino. Its a very quaint casino, and around Christmas time I would have to classify it as the prettiest I ever seen. Here is a picture of it. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...7&ff=324920946

Anyway, the last time I was there was way back in Nov 2012. I actually made two trips there that Nov. One trip was early in the month and the second later in the month. I think it was on that second trip I ran into a terrible snowstorm. I remember heading out on a beautiful day. The temps were way above average. I knew there might be a storm, but didn't think much of it since the road between Marquette and Christmas is close to the Big Lake and temps are always warmer there early in the winter season. Then the storm hit. Terrible winds. I stayed in the motel most of the second day waiting for the casino to open. It was so bad I decided to walk the mile to the casino and leave my car at the motel as it was cased in ice and snow.

There is a hotel right next to the casino called White Pine Lodge. I don't remember why I didn't stay there. They might have been closed or probably to expensive. I stayed at a place called the Christmas motel. A mom and pop place with really nice folks running it. It was very old, and the rooms were small, but only cost $50 a night. Here is a picture. Great reviews on Google.

Anyway, at one time all the Kewadin casinos offered great games. They now have all went to hell with csm machines.

Plowed snow to the top of telephone polls is nothing to worry about. When you get snow from a storm up to the top of telephone phones then you are up shit's creek. https://cdn.citylab.com/media/img/ci...mod=1494542382

And here is Ironwood, MI. Only a mile from the red light district of Hurley WI.

I would of never guessed in a million years that little town up there had a Casino!

Those pictures of the telephone poles you posted below reminds me exactly like the ones I saw years ago. Hard to believe that much snow could even fall in one place. I bet you triple check that grocery list before shopping come winter time.

I must be losing it or getting Alzheimer's. Today I told the wife I was going out to shovel when I meant to say cut the grass. Anyway, Labor Day pretty much marks the end of grass cutting for the year. I don't think I will be cutting it again unless especially warm weather.

Now the next 3 months will be good blackjack playing conditions. Most of the tourists have left and comps are easier to come by. No grass to cut and hopefully no significant snow for the next 3 months.
